for y'alls who got a CB
just curious? what antennas are you guys running and how high? i DID have two 4ft whips till my dad took the truck through the wash... now i have half a one pretty much. well i saw a 102" at radio shack, and by the reviews everyone swears by them! though, thats damn tall and i'd be smacking stuff left and right. i can put a spring down there (two mounts on my tool box)what do you guys think? also i'm looking into the cobramodel 29 with nightwatch and NOAA. so yeah, also picked up some arrows for huntin season :)

RE: for y'alls who got a CB
here's some pics on page 2. i've got the cobra 29 NW/WX like you're talking about. its a nice radio. i've got a 2 ft firestick that just clears my garage door. reception would be a lot better with a taller or better placed antenna, but oh well, i'm usually looking at the truck i'm talking to so it doesn't matter.

RE: for y'alls who got a CB
i run 2 4 ft whips attached to the grounded tool box.. whips work better if you have a good ground.. i just ran a 12 guage solid copper wire from the chassis to the bolt that mounts the antenna to the tool box.. and it works great.. also..i used rg-6.. yes.. thats cable tv coaxial cable.. with the cable tv ends on it... and i bought the adapters at radio shack to hook it up to the whip and to the radio... and it works MUCH better than that thin crappy wire w/ the crappy connectors.. solid copper works better than that braided stranded crap...

RE: for y'alls who got a CB
I run dual 4ft firstik II's... There are two types, one isa super flex, and the ones I went with are rather think. I went with dual heavy-duty springs all mounted to custom cb mounts that attach right behind the cab on the bed rail. (they look similar to the aluminum cap clamps.) The thing is they are made of aluminum with like steel grounding pins inside the aluminum. Since aluminum isn't a good conductor, you need the pins or I would have just made a set myself. I got them from a local dealer who invented them. The coax weattached doesnt have a pl259 connector. Lol, I have a completely different setup than most guys, but it is the same concept. I wont be home for like another month or more, so whenI get home I will take a picture. Here is the coax I use. Feel free to pm me any cb questions.

I'd have to dig around for my paperwork but I didn't go the Firestik route. I drive tight trails and that thing is so stiff it'd get ripped off from a branch. Mine you can bend in a loop and it won't hurt it. It's been bent sideways with no issue and no damage to the mount. I also used coax to connect mine to my old Cobra radio. If you want one that's flexible like that, let me know and I'll try to find my paperwork.

ORIGINAL: Mike454 dhvaughan, how do you like that radio? i am looking into getting one as i think my uniden just died... wx is a nice feature for camping. 2 friends of mine bought the small cobra from wal-mart for $34 and it works great too, maybe better than mine. firestick antenna is stiff, but if you mount it on a spring it can take the abuse. make sure its grounded or it doesn't work. |
RE: for y'alls who got a CB
I'm running two 5' Firestik FS2 whips and a Cobra 29NWST. I love the features of the Cobra 29, Weather Reports are great, Sound Tracker clears up everything. The 2 whips are mounted to springs and on the side of my toolbox, works pretty good, just gotta watch where all ya go. Almost wish I would have went with 4' whips instead.
