Default bigger tires

i was told by a tranny shop that if i put bigger tires on it will jack up my tranny ... he says that the bigger tires will tell the comp that its moving slowere than it is and will reduce the line pressure , causing undectable sliping and cook the trans .... any feed back ???

I bought my 95 ram 1/2 ton 4x4 brand new in 95 and the next day I upgraded the tires from 245/75 R16 (barely 31 inches tall) to 295/75 R16 (33.6 inches tall). I never went any smaller since then (140,000 miles and counting) with NO tranny issues. Have pulled 25 foot boat and wheeled the hell out of her as well. Kept the trans fluid changed and installed a aux trans cooler is all I have done. Getting ready to add 35x12.50 R15 tires as soon as my wheels come in tomorrow. Might not exactly answer your question, but it sure as hell is a decent testimony to argue to your tranny guy!! ha ha!

ummm.
i think that most dodge ram transmissions will eventually fail sooner or later because they are weak and crappy, but it doesn't have anything to do with tire size.

It's not difficult to have your PCM reprogrammed for the larger tires (98 and newer). That said, I don't really think 285's are going to give you much issues. They are not that much bigger nor much heavier then the stock tires.

Hey russ, the 285's and 295's fit just fine on a stock 1/2 ton with no mods on stock wheels. the only issue i had with rubbing is at full steering lock on turning where the edge of the tire makes contact with the upper control arm. makes an annoying ringing sound, but it only did it at full lock holding the steering wheel hard. a set of wheel spacers took care of the problem for about 25 bucks for all 4. Gimme a shout if you need any other details!

That's not a huge change in tire size. I ran 33s for a long time with no gear change without an issue. I ran 35s for a year at least without a tranny issue. My tranny has been fine for the past 100k miles. I also have a shift kit in mine too though. And an external cooler. But that's it.
