Well I removed the switches from the steering wheel and followed the directions in VWANDDODGE's link about how to disassemble and clean the switch. Great step-by-step post by the way. Reassembled everything and no difference- light comes on, but cruise won't catch. Any further advice?

there is a vacuum test port on the passenger side.

you could remove and plug the vacuum line going to the cruise control solenoid underneath the battery, and run a temporary vacuum line from the test port nipple to the cruise control solenoid.

if the cruise began to work again
that would indicate you need to carefully work backwards down the original vacuum line to the cruise control looking for the leak

good luck

Ok HankL, I'll give that a try. I know now that it is a vacuum leak, as my A/C goes from vent to defrost when under load.

I removed the battery and the tray, and yeah vacuum hose is broken in 2 places- right at the elbow, and about 2 inches away from that. Dodge dealer quoted me $16 for a new vacuum line harness they call it, including the elbow. Ready to plug in at both ends. Pretty reasonable I'd say, or is repairing it better?

That's your call. I'd say go ahead with the dealer part in this case unless you can make do with something better.

Problem solved after spending a whopping $3.25 on vacuum hose and an elbow. You guys rock! The help and diagnosis was very much appreciated.

I am having a similar problem with my Dodge ram 1500, 1998 model. The light comes on the cruise control engages when I press the button and set the speed, but about 60 seconds later it disengages as if it were turned off. Then it does not come back on again. All hoses of been checked, no vacuum leaks, all hoses of been replaced. Any suggestions?
