Groan when in reverse?
 

Hey I know I am not the only one who has this problem but I want to see what everyone else has done about it! When I shift to reverse when leaving my driveway or anywhere for that matter a groaning noise comes from somewhere underneath my truck. When I shift back to neutral or drive it immediately goes away. Looking for what causes this and what to fix it.

i to had this problem with our 1996 ram 1500...but i read somewhere in one of these threads that a dodge trans missiion does not pump fluid when in park....so now when we start it in the morning...now we are parked down hill with our tire against a curb..so be careful....but now when we start our truck i shift it into neutral....let it warm up...and then go back to reverse..when we do it this way...there is no noise like there was...i dont think it is hurting anything thats the way it was designed but i am not sure...hope this helps somewhat..something to try....

My '96 does the same thing,.. Go for neutral for a min if it bothers you.

Hey thanks Ill definately start it and shift to neutral, let it warm up. I am kind of anal about noises that are not supposed to be made. Thanks!!

I know, it's still an issue for some. APS has a fix. Go to products>transmission products>tramsission accessories and scroll down to updated governor pressure valve:

Another trans buzz TSB

I did the TSB aim4squirrls posted and it didn't change the noise at all.
Replacing the regulator valve with the one posted in the above TSB fixed the problem for me.

This is actually considered by many to be a "normal" noise and expected in the 46RE. It can be caused from the pressure relief valve occilating in the valve body when pressures are high and fluid is cold. There is a TSB to fix this problem (posted above by Rabbler), but from what I have read, it does not seem to fix the noise in all cases. I have seen posts from Chrysler service techs on another forums that basically explain this as being a bad design flaw of some sort in this transmission, but it is not detrimental to transmission life expectancy or performance, just an annoying side affect of cold fluid and reverse gear pressures. Mine has done it since I owned my truck, and I tried to have it fixed once to no avail. Then when my trans went out, it was rebuild under warranty, and it still did it even after that. I mentioned it to the dealer, and was told me pretty much the same thing I read on other forums.
