Hello all. New to the forum and Dodge Trucks. I have a 1998 with a 5.9L MPI quad cab 1500. Looking to get specific info on the horsepower that it had when it rolled off the line as well as the towing capacity of the truck. Dodge can't help me because they can't look it up for vehicles older than model year 2000. Thanks. BP

Its pretty much the same as a 2001, or very close.

2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 1500 w/ 5.9L...
Towing capacity is approximately 7100 lbs.
Power is approximately 245 HP, 335 lb-ft.

 

So I am guessing that a 96 would be pretty much the same?

I am just wondering because that might be a but low to tow my JEEP and flat trailer.

 

if you were to install a fifth wheel hitch you could tow more than that. The only problem is the Trasmission wont pull it for long with out problems
I thought about putting a hitch on mine but the only things we tow weigh well over 15,000lbs, and I didnt want to risk trashing my tranny over the conveince

 

A 98 QC has a towing capacity of just under 5500lbs.
the 01 QC and newer is 7300 lbs.

the only real change between those years are the brakes.

I am looking at getting basically the same truck. How much could you tow with just the ball on the bumper? What about a hitch that is under the bumper and bolts to the bumper? I will mainly be using it for towing about a 2000lb boat.

 

The bumper has a very low tow rating. Better to just get a hitch that connects to the frame.
