Need your help, 1.7 install fail
 

After reading all the posts, I ordered a set of HS 1.7 rockers. Today I decided to do the install.

Took about 2 hours to remove valve covers working alone.

Removal of stock rockers was straight forward.

Installing HS rockers confused my at first. I assumed that the bolt goes through the rocker to the spacer and mounts to the head. TQ to 21 lbs.

After install truck was difficult to start, had to give it gas and was running like crap. Very choppy but running.

I listened carefully but did not hear any concerns.

Closed the hood to back out of the garage, click, click, click was all I heard.

I shut it down and am leaving it until tomorrow.

I am frustrated and at best have average mechanical skills.

Can you guys help or give me some thoughts.

1. Check any plug wires to make sure they're on the correct plug and distributor point. A spark plug wire on the wrong plug will run rough. The firing order should be on your intake manifold up front. The distributor cap will have a number 1 right near the number 1 tower. Trace that wire from the disty cap to the spark plug. Then go clockwise around the cap to cylinder 8, then the next, and so on, tracing each wire all the way to the plug.

2. Make sure you didn't accidentally unplug anything like the cam sensor, IAC, TPS, MAP Sensor.

3. A little clicking is OK for about a minute as the oil travels up the pushrods to lube the rockers. Did the pushrods all look parallel when you installed the rockers? If not, one might be hanging on the edge of a cup.

If you could give me the location of those items, I will check them.

I will go back in tomorrow to see if a pushrod is out of alignment.

the cam sensor plug is down near the distributor, as is the crank sensor plug.

The TPS, IAC and MAP sensors are all on the throttle body

Did you disconnect the throttle body linkages on the passenger side of the Throttle body? Make sure the accelerator pedal linkage goes underneath the guide notch.

Update...

Truck fires up and idles normally.


Loud clicking still, I'll be going back in tomorrow.

when you remove the valve covers to check it out, if the problem is not obvious, go ahead and connect all your wires back up and crank the truck. oil will leak out and make a mess, but what the hell, it'll allow you to look and touch the rockers as everything's moving.

just one side is clicking right ?

if its running ok and not skipping bad, it can't be too out of whack. could be that one of them wasn't seated exactly right when you torqued it down, and now its loose. stay up, now you get to exercise your problem solving skills... :)

I did this mod myself with just help from the guy's from DTW and it took me all day because I didn't have the right tool to take out the screws on the back of the drivers side valve cover but when I was done I started her up and she just shut off so I started her again and she shook like crazy but after a few seconds it was fine went for a drive and she felt even better than before.

sound like you have a loose rocker arm or the oil is not getting to the arms

i am thinking one of your pushrods are not seated correctly.

I had RR's on my 95 dakota and never again, seemed they were always tickin and lossenin up.
