sloppy steering problem ??? HELP
i am a little disappointed today guys. my 97 ram 2wd had an alignment done a few weeks ago and the =alignment shop guy told me the steering play i have was the pitman arm so i had a garage replace it today and it seemed to help some but its still there what else could i check ?? i think it shoald be alot better than this guys .does anyone else have this problem before
i also seem a brace on ebay that is made just for these trucks to help brace the steering box for smoother steering and handling.has anyone ever tried one of these  |
My truck has very sloppy steering also, I figured it was a combination of the oversized tires, pitman arm and possible the steering stabilizer...I'll have to look closer at that arm and keep an eye on this tread for any other information.

when u say steering stabalizer are u talking bout the sway bar??? since i changed the pitman arm it took some of the slopp out but i figured the rest was in the gear box dunno know for sure

Since you have just done the pitman arm the other stuff you might expect to go out in around the same time would be tie rod ends and ball joints. You probably end up changing these regular wear items every 100K or so, or even sooner if you do a lot of hard core terrain.
|
You may also want to see if there is any adjustment to the steering box that you can do. There was a write up somewhere on here on how to do it, and what to look for. It seemed to help mine a little.

Be thankful your problem is sloppy steering and not sloppy seconds!

Sloppy steering? Sound perfectly normal for a Dodge truck.
|
sounds alot like mine- replaced ptiman arm, tierod ends, steering stabilizer, wheel bearings and ball joints. Also put a new intermediate shaft in, all that helped a little, but its still all over the place. Good luck!

I heard there is a big problem with the steering shafts on these trucks. I bought a Borgeson for mine and should have it in pretty soon. i will report how it does. Mine hes new upper and lower ball joints and wheel bearings. it needs a pitman arm and an idler arm. the tie rod ends seem ok, but I am going to replace them anyways.

Check the bushing at the bottom of the steering column, where it comes out of the firewall under the brake booster.Just grab it and see if it moves up and down. And here is the gear box adjustment thread. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-steering.html
