HID's & Radio Static
Put dual HID on my friends 05 Durango (yes this is a ram forum but I think ill get more of a response here and I dont think its a Year/Make/Model problem).
When the HID's are on the radio is constant static. My truck and everyone else I know with HID's its only static for about 30 seconds then it goes away but with her Durango its constant. Any ideas? Do they sell anything to block out the static? Thanks, |
I have no idea what causes the static but they sell 12V line filters to dump any line noise to ground. It's just a coil in-line and a capacitive shunt to ground.

Went to the audio shop and its about a $50 fix. |
Use a filter or a Capacitor.

This the type of filter I should be looking for? And should I put it inline just like they say to do from the battery and cig lighter? Thanks, |
That's the one. It takes any noise on the +12V line and dumps it to ground. I don't know what in the HID's causes noise but if it's being introduced through the +12V supply, this will fix it.

My guess is the electricity is converted to A/C by the HID ballasts (since they're basically the same as mercury vapor or metal halide lamps).
This is just a guess but I work with Metal Halide lighting for saltwater aquariums and they're a very similar design... |
Do I just need one to run via the power wire from battery to cig lighter like they say on there site or do I need 1 for each HID's Power wire?
Thanks, |
The +12V line runs (electrically) to both HID's already. Capacitors look like a dead short to A/C ... an open to D/C. The cap will short the A/C right to ground. Just somewhere in the system should do it.

Thanks for all the info everyone, gonna talk to her tomorrow and let her know the HID can stay and the radio can stay too!
