1999 Ram 1500 Aluminum drive shaft vs metal
1999 Ram 1500 5.2 has aluminum drive shaft that is damaged (bent) and must be replaced. No luck at junk yards as all that I have seen are bent badly by them apparently moving around with forklifts.
Local shop builds drive shafts and said he will build one but not out of aluminum and will use the steel metal type. My question to him was why but no real good answer. Basically he told me that Dodge used both metal and aluminum that year and it really does not matter.
My question is has anyone had any experience wtih going from an aluminum to metal? The obvious to me is the weight difference between the two and will the metal put too much added weight causing extra strain on the tranny.
I do have a 1998 1500 V6 motor with a metal drive shaft that I had to rebuild the transmission but it also had 175000 miles on it and probably due for failure anyway...Thanks
