Lift Kit For 2WD truck

Can you get a lift kit for a 2wd truck?? or do you have to have 4wd to be able to add one on?

dodgeram07 05-31-2009 11:10 PM

you can get a lift kit for a 2wd,,,, what size are you wanting and how much money you want to spend?

dmo90 05-31-2009 11:23 PM

im thinkin 2-4" I like how 4x4s are evened out and i think the lift makes it look tougher. I dont know much about pricing them. Im going more for look, but i dont want something cheap that could just crap out on me if i decide to put it through some stuff

dakotas ram 05-31-2009 11:24 PM

search on ebay and youll find bodylifts and suspension

dmo90 05-31-2009 11:30 PM

What exactly is the difference

dodgeram07 05-31-2009 11:43 PM

look around on here they have 2in lift kits
http://store.fatbobsgarage.com/share...t=products.asp

a 2in spacer in the front will level it out.. also on ebay they have 2-2.5 taller springs
if your going taller spring or spacer of 2.5in you need atfer maket upper c-arm to keep that aliment,,, and also people like to get longer shocks

also no sure if this is the right link but 3in lift spindle
http://www.airbagit.com/product_p/x2-spi-dod-02.htm

also fabtech makes a 6.5in lift

but the best bang for the buck is 2in spacer or taller spring to level it out then a 3in body lift and tall sping... i would guese that would run about 350bucks maybe

dakotas ram 05-31-2009 11:50 PM

if youre not gonna be out goin crazy in it, i would just go with a 3" bodylift......heres a link......what year is your truck?

dmo90 05-31-2009 11:50 PM

bodylifts= not much it would all come in a kit

suspension= in the front a taller spring and new upper c-arm and shocks or lift spindle with 17in rims or bigger with O.E outset

dmo90 06-01-2009 01:04 AM

So is it just smart to get the bodylift since everythings in it

dodge15004x45.9 06-01-2009 01:05 AM

Body lifts are much harder than they look.

dakotas ram 06-01-2009 01:11 AM

i would say so, from what i hear if youve got a friend or two to help and are decent with tools its not too bad

dmo90 06-01-2009 01:17 AM

Well i know one guy who would help me. Hes also a mechanic and he installed a 4" lift on his sons tahoe and he helped my friend out on her lift. so installing it shouldnt be a big problem

dodge15004x45.9 06-01-2009 02:10 AM

Wit a body lift you have to extend lines steering shaft. blah blah. Suspension just picks the hole truck up. You might still have to extend some lines.

dmo90 06-01-2009 03:06 AM

So youre suggesting suspension?? thatll give me the look im goin for?

dodge15004x45.9 06-01-2009 03:16 AM

When it comes down to it its up to you. Body lifts sound like a pain. Your are a 2wd so you will have to replace a few more parts.(listed) I like the look of a suspension much better than a body.

EDIT: a body lift will just pick up the hole truck a sus lift will make it level and jack it up.. What are you plans for wheels/tires?

dakotas ram 06-01-2009 11:32 AM

well, with the body lift, it comes with the extender for the shifter and the steering so thats not a problem and i believe your brake lines are safe

EndIsNear 06-01-2009 12:20 PM

The only thing about a body lift, is it literally lifts the entire chassis off of the frame. The kits usually come with everything you need to do the lift, but not always. Most don't include both bumper brackets, so you have to spend another hundred. Since the bumper is bolted to the frame, it will look 3" lower than the chassis. Other things to consider are step-rails, bumper guards, etc. The kit will not come with parts to pick these up as well, so you will have to fabricate them to make it match. One more thing to think about it, you won't get any clearance with a body lift. The frame sill stay where it is, so potential offroading would be a pain.

A suspension does the opposite. It picks both the frame and body up together as one, giving you some added clearance, which definantly helps us lower 2WD's. You can get suspension kits for relatively cheap, you just have to research some things. Like most on here said, upper-control arms and such will be out of line with more angle introduced to them, which will require aftermarket. They aren't cheap. Dealers to look for are:

www.fabtechmotorsports.com
www.doetsch-shocks.com
www.google.com (:) best on yet)

dakotas ram 06-01-2009 01:39 PM

that kit that i linked to comes with a front bumper bracket, but not a rear.....you can get one for around $50.......

dmo90 06-01-2009 07:10 PM

thanks. ill start researching because tahts the next thing i would like to do to the truck. i think ill go with suspenion. because i have step rails and stuff and i still wanna be able to go off road

dakotas ram 06-02-2009 12:40 AM

it would be a piece of cake to make brackets for your steps

dakotas ram 06-02-2009 01:53 AM

If you want to off road get suspension lift!!

dakotas ram 06-02-2009 02:26 AM

olyelr has suspension and body and he offroads......i think he said his has been on for quite some time with no problems

speeddemon31176 06-02-2009 02:33 AM

The only issue with a body lift when offroading is that you are creating excess stress on the body due to the increase in distance between the body and the frame. Unless you are jumping your truck then you shouldn't have a problem with a body lift and suspension. The reason they don't recommend both lifts combined is because you are creating a higher center of gravity and are more prone to rolling over. If you don't drive like a nut and remember that your trucks weight differential has changed to a higher center of gravity and drive appropriately you will be fine. Just my humble opinion.

He is also a 4x4 the nose of his truck is not making pot hole in the ground when he goes over bump. If I was lifting a 4x2 SUSPENSION!!! The body lift the nose of the truck will still be in the dirt. The suspension will take care of both. Leveling the truck and picking it up.

speeddemon31176 06-02-2009 03:03 AM

Oops. Didn't see that his was 4x2. Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah in that case I would agree that a suspension lift is the way to go. Otherwise like 4x45.9 said your front bumper will become a shovel when going over any kind of off angle bump. You just wouldn't have the approach/departure angle needed for offroad with just the body lift.

dakotas ram 06-02-2009 11:55 AM

the kit comes with front bumper bracket that brings it up also.....?

dodgeram07 06-02-2009 12:11 PM

just a reminber over a 2.5-3 range and higher(in the front) you may have alignment problem, if so you will need to buy a differnt upper control arm...

rudavila23 02-05-2010 06:18 PM

I have a 2004 1500 2wd. Do I have to level it before getting a lift kit? I just want to lift it 6" or less and i really dont know what i would have to use to lift it.

redneckrocket38 02-05-2010 09:41 PM

I have an 01 and this is the kit I ordered http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-01...#ht_3773wt_964 It was pretty cheap(do a best offer), easy to install, and retained a pretty good ride.I didnt use the rear blocks though. Im able to swing a 33x12.50x15 with minimal rubbing. If you want more than the 3" I'd suggest a spindle lift, but depending on your backspacing I think you may need 17" rims.

01greenram 02-05-2010 10:00 PM

i have an 01 1500 with a 3 inch body and 3 inch suspension and a 1inch level everything came out fine im running 35's no problem i went with the rough country 3 inch spindles check with top gunz customz they have a 2or3 inch budget lift

jjlemay92 01-07-2014 08:27 PM

If I just get 3 inch lift springs what would I need besides shocks
Spindles?

HeyYou 01-07-2014 09:11 PM

I think 3" is the maximum for the stock control arms/ball joints.... beyond that, and you try and move them past their limits. (and things break..... not a good scene with steering parts.....)

Not sure on the 2by's, but, on the 4x4s, stock shocks will tolerate 3" as well.

Spindles: Only if you want more lift than can be had with just springs.
