coolant leak, don't know where its coming from
i just replaced the head gaskets on my dads 95 ram 1500 5.2l, and the truck seems to run just fine but there is a coolant leak, not a big one, and i just cannot find where it is coming from. any ideas? thanks ahead of time.

Was it leaking coolant before you did the head gaskets? If not then maybe you bent the head gasket when installing it. I know I just discovered one of my freeze plugs is leaking so that is another option to look at.
|
the head gasket on the drivers side was leaking before, thanks ill take a look at the freeze plugs.

Does the leak seem to be coming from up high on the engine or down low? The answer to that question will help to narrow down where it is leaking from.
|
it seems to be coming from down low.
|
From the front or back portion of the engine?
|
its seems to becoming from the back side where it is hard to see
|
If it is coming from down low as in below the head mounting surface then I would guess that either a freeze plug is leaking(more likely) or you have a cracked block(very unlikely).
EDIT: Your intake could be leaking at the back of it and letting coolant leak down the back of the block. Try looking with a falshlight with it running and look up at the back of the engine where the tranny mounts to the engine. |
Yeah, you're going to have to see how high the leak is coming from. Because if it ain't high(as in above the tranny), I'm afraid you might have a leaking plug located on the back of the block behind the torque converter.

That's what I am thinking too. I have a leaking one behind the pass. side motor mount. Any good ideas on changing it without pulling the engine. I know I could jack the motor and pull both parts of the mount but I don't know if I would have enough room to drive in the new one.
