97 drum brakes
i have a 97 1500. the rear shoe adjuster hits a spring that holds the shoes together and doesn't touch the star. i assume i put it together wrong, but i cannot find a diagram. all of the pictures i have found show a cable, but mine does not have a cable.
anyone have a diagram or could tell me how that part assembles? thanks! |
Looking at a picture of the Ram 2500. The adjuster lever that rides on the star wheel should be toward the rear of the vehicle. The adjuster screw assembly should have the star wheel toward the rear under the adjuster lever and the long end toward the front. The spring that holds the shoes together should have the long straight end toward the rear behind the star wheel and adjuster lever and the coiled spring with the short end should be toward the front.
When you have it assembled right, the lever should ride on the star wheel with the long end of the spring just behind it. If you have not touched the other side, you can open it and look at it for a reference. Hope this helps. |

These are pics from my 1997 Ram when I replaced the shoes. Maybe this will help you.

thank you thank you laramie1997!
after staring at those pics for 20 minutes i finally noticed what i had done wrong. there is a small spring perch that sits in the adjuster arm for the spring that holds the shoe on. i had that in backwards which threw the alignment of the adjuster off. i now get the lovely click of the shoes self adjusting! |
Simple, all you did was take some time to photographs and put them online, but for me it is a very simple answer. had to drill out the pads, and the self adjuster was confusing me as i had expected it to be the opposite of the drivers side; to be fair it was 5:30am when I started and I have yet to drink my cup of coffee...

Ya never know. When I did my rear brakes after buying my truck, I found two primary shoes on one side, and two secondarys on the other side.
