Transmission leak

Ok my poor old truck has 169000 mile on it. I just noticed the other day that i have a small tranny leak. I think its from the front seal. its wet on the dust cover and a little drip from there. Is it really hard to change it?? Or can I use stop leak to fix?? The transmission shifts great. I pull and a old metal stock trailer with 2 to 5 horses in it alot. The truck is in great shape so i dont wanna ruin it. thanks for the help. Oh ya its a 1999 Dodge ram slt extended cab 5.2 liter and auto tranny

so - is it leaking from the seal around the torque convertor, and into the bell housing/dust cover area ? or is it leaking from the pan gasket ?

if its coming from the front seal, then you'd have to drop the trans, remove torque converter, etc. i don't know about you, but it'd have to be pretty serious leak for me to do this.

as far as fluid on the dust cover, are you sure its trans fluid. leaking rear main will put oil in that same spot. that can be changed by dropping oil pan.

ya its the front seal on the tranny. its not much of a leak hand sized leak in 3 days. I just dont like leaks. the tranny pan i replaced the gasket on it 3 weeks ago and changed fluid ect

dodgeram2001 07-15-2009 09:36 PM

so replace it ?

ok Im not a rich guy. I install heating and air for living. Not good pay. Its not really bad but I am a decent Mechanic. Just wanting to know how hard for one guy this would be?

Sheriff420 07-16-2009 03:10 PM

not so much hard but a real pain. a pain that will last for a few hours if you don't have anyone to help you out. i read over the tranny removal instructions and said screw that and let the tranny guy take it out to save myself a headache.

I have a very similar problem, except mine is literally pouring out of the bell housing/dust cover area. Definitely not at all drivable. Sorry to raise a thread from the dead but is it possible that it is just a blown seal or cracked TC. The tranny shifts fine when driving, yeah it has a ATF fountain underneath, but on my way home it shifted fine. Let me know what you guys think?? It started flowing after it got hot while mudding. I think I need to change my gears. 3:55 with 33s not the best match but I cruise a 2000rpm doing 75.
