How to tell if you have tranny problems?
Hello all, I'm new to this forum and new to dodge trucks. I picked up a 1998 1500 4x4 with 140k miles for really cheap. I read through posts on this forum and it seems like transmission problems are pretty common for these trucks.
Other than the obvious stuff like the truck slipping in and out of gear, what sings should I look for to indicate transmission problems? For example, I just drove it on a 400 mile trip on the highway and everything seemed fine. But a few times I noticed a "hard" upshift or downshift, mostly at slower speeds. Is this a bad sign? Or, is it pretty normal for an 11 y/o truck to shift hard sometimes?
thanks,
pf

Do you know if this trans has had the normal servicing on it? Has it been rebuilt yet?
The 46RE trans straight form Chrysler is known for having flaws that cause it to need rebuilding typically between 80-110k.
My truck shifts pretty hard, but that is just because I just rebuilt it last January and put a shift kit in it to make it shift harder.
