Tire Stud Broke off
Hey Fellas,
My tire studs broke off while I was driving my truck. I wanted to know how easy is it to replace the studs. I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2. 1. Do i just remove the broken ones, and buy factory sized tire studs and replace? 2. When I called the Dodge Dealer they told me I had to replace the entire axel? It sounds pretty extreme. Thanks in advance |
Shouldn't a new hub work? You broke where the wheel mounts to correct?
|
Front or rear?
|
im pretty sure that front or back are as easy as just replacing the broke one
|
just replace the broken studs. your dodge dealer is full of $hit (as usual).
you can use a hammer, or a press to remove the old one. a press is less violent and less likely to damage a bearing. http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/studs.php video of an easy one. i've never had one come out that easy lol. http://www.ehow.com/video_2327338_re...-nut-stud.html 4150A press. i'm sure theres a cheap one somewhere, but i can't find it. http://www.costplustools.com/Miller-..._536-6503.html ha. here's a nice one. i think axles would be cheaper. http://www.mile-x.com/tiger-tool-106...mover-kit.aspx |
after you get a new one in there make sure you put anti seize on the threads before you put the lugs on.
|
yes the anti-seize works wonder lol i had the same i was just driving and i heard a tink-tink from my drivers front and i was like WTF??? lol so i stopped and walked back to where i heard it and there was my lug nut in the street with the end of the wheel stud in it.... so i went to my work and bought a new wheel stud and lug nut for like 4 bucks and took my wheel and caliper and rotor off and hammered out the old one and hammered in the new one i couldnt get it hammered in all the way so i just put it all back to gether and when i put that lug nut on as i tightened it down it pulled it through the rest of the way lol it was fun but i got it done

use a drift punch and a hammer to remove the old ones, tap new ones in, and they will snug up completely when you put the tire back on
|
Thank you everyone for the great info!

I just had this happen to me to two of them on the highway so I hope this works. glad this thread is o here
