leveling kit for '01 off road
hello all...
this is my first post here so be gentle
i put some 315 70 17 (iirc) tires on the truck awhile ago and am getting tired of the rubbing so i would like to get a leveling kit.
to all who have installed one of these i would like to get some input on which kits are good etc.
i am also going to do the shocks since they are still oem (55000 mi)... i like the rancho shocks on my jeep so i may stick with them unless i am convinced otherwise.
the kits i have looked at say you don't need lift shocks? any input on that would be nice also since i would think the stock length shocks would be quite limited.
keep in mind that some kits supposedly will not work on the off road version.
thanks, chris

RE: leveling kit for '01 off road
I did a spring swap on mine and it was really simple, jack it up and support from the frame, put a jack under the axle and relieve some pressure on the shock then remove the tires, lower shock mount and swaybar links. drop it down and the spring will be very loose and basiclly just about fall out. then you can install the leveling kit (which I didnt do... it's 3 bolts if I remember correctly from the websites).
I put in 3/4 ton springs for 2.5" of lift, then added 2" blocks in the rear.

my 97 sport has 305s on it and thats the biggest i can put on as the sport (not sure if the off road is the same) comes factory 2 in lift but yeah that sound to me like quite a bit of rubbing should happen. i only get it when shocks are compressed a little and taking a sharp turn.

1. Younggun: you got snowed, even an '02 and up 4x4 with IFS can fit 285s without rub and they sit much lower than 2nd gens.
2. Badkarma: not sure about the ride height difference on a sport but the offroad editions definitely sit higher
3. Everyone: remember that the '01 Offroad editions use a proprietary spring(meaning unlike all other rams) and therefore can't be swapped or lifted using kits for other models. I believe however that the 2" leveling kit will work just fine.

RE: leveling kit for '01 off road
Ironically I just finished installing a 2" leving kit on my 01 off road today. The kit is a "tough country" bought off e-bay for about $60.00. It was pretty straight forward. Just as if you were changing your shocks. I just had to unbolt the anti-sway bar. Other than that is was faily easy. I reused all of the factorty hardware and eveything turned out fine. It lookes absolutly awsome! Perfectlly level. It made my front wheel well match my back ones. I had some Bf goodrich 285/70/17 mud terrains put on yesterday so I am defenetly sitting up a little more now. Anyway, to awnser your qeustion lafester, I have an 01 OFF ROAD and used a 2" leveling kit and was able to use all of the factory hardware[sm=loser.gif]

I have heard several people say can't fit a 305-70-16 with some aftermarket rims with differnt backspacing but they work fine with stock wheels. I have also heard of people putting 315's on stock rims but have rubbing like he did. What I have read it seems like it really depends on your wheels as to what tire you can fit.

You put a 2" leveling kit in the Off-raod and it looks different? I have a black 01 off-road and have always wondered if it would change the front ride height because of the spring being different. You wouldn't happen to have before and after pics eh? I've wanted to do this for ages but living in canada, it's hard to get a hold of some of these items/information.
You called the kit the "tough country". Now I'm getting excited!!
*off to ebay I go*

Sorry but I don't have any before pic's but I just took these. It might be hard to tell , but it leveled out perfectly. It is not too high but just right. I measured from the bottom of my mirrors to the ground and it raised it 2" exactlly. It gives it (IMO) a more agressive look. I will try to get some better pictures this weekend. Acctually my signature pic is before, you can't see it very well.
