Tranny can't downshift from 4th (OD)

What would cause this?

With my 285 tires and stock gears, my truck cruises at 1700rpm when at 65. When it drops down to about 60mp it is at about 1500rpm. It won't downshift. It will try, but bounce back and forth and back and forth between 4th and 3rd. I have to get out of the gas, and then get on the gas good to get it to downshift. Most of the time I end up turning the OD off if I know I will be traveling less than 65mph.

I don't get a racing of the engine like it is slipping. Just can't get it to commit to downshifting on it's own.

The transmission pan is the only part of this truck that is wet (fluid on it). And it looks like an easy fix to drop the pan and replace the gasket. (I will read up on searches to do that), but I am wondering if what I am experiencing, some of you might have in the past as well.

The truck does have 207k on it, and I don't know if the PO rebuilt/replaced the tranny.

I think that 4.10 gears would solve the issue, but I am not ready to drop over $1000 on gears. Is this something I can fix myself as a 2.5 Banana mechanic?

...isnt this your 4th tranny thread?

AlabamaRam95 Nov 6, 2009 10:03 AM

is it a problem between 3rd and 4th or between 4th and TC lock-up?

more than likely if you are traveling at 65mph at 1700RPM your TC is locked...which is a good thing. however, if it is not releasing when your RPMS drop then you have a TC problem.

obviously you need to replace that pan gasket, check the magnet for excess shavings, and be sure the fluid level is correct.

...but it sounds to me like you have a TC issue.

What is "TC"?

Yes, 95Ram 360. It is. But the more I drive it, the better I can explain it. Fluid filling thread was a help, but didn't fix the issue. Now that I have driven it on the highway more, I figured I better explain it better to help you experienced guys understand what is going on. Haven't had anyone give me suggestions as to what the problem might be yet. Until AlabamaRam95 up above. I just have to figure out what the "TC" is.

How do I fix the TC? Is that a driveway, 1 afternoon fix?
