96 Ram won't go into gear

Hey I have a 96 1500 2wd and I have been having tranny problems for some time. At first the truck would not go into o/d occasionally, this led to no 1-2 or 2-3 shift. I read up on here and ran the codes which led me to think it was a bad senor/solenoid. I replaced those this morning and had the same problem after, now the truck won't go into any drive gear although reverse still works fine.

The fluid level is ok but when I dropped the pan I noticed a fair bit of crud around the magnet in the bottom of the pan. Does anyone have any ideas whats causing this?

Any help would be apreciated

Cheers
Kev

how many miles? typically by 150K these need rebuilds on the trannys...your actually considered lucky if you make it to 150K....do you know if you have the 46RH or 46RE tranny?

I think I have the RE in mine. Its at just under 230,000 km's so not even at 150,000 miles yet

the RE are weaker than the RH's (RE is an electric tranny, RH is mechanical.)....ive heard of them going before 100K, and if you've towed, then its probably time for a rebuild, and dont forget the TC when doing the rebuild.... but check the linkage and see if its binding anywhere, if not, 98% chance it needs a rebuild....

Well I've never towed with it, but I have only owned it for around 7 months it doesn't appear that the previous owner ever towed with it as well since it doesn't have a hitch on it

Any other advice on this thing?

Have you tried adjusting the bands?

What kind of fluid do you put in it?

When you start getting "chunks" of stuff in the pan particularly small parts instead of the normal wet anti seize metal shavings...things have gone very very wrong...when its that bad..you take it to the transmission shop and get it rebuilt

its not a chunck of metal. it was just one piece n it didnt do any damage. i need to find a 46re tranny manual so i can see where it goes. maybe it was in there from last people but it looks like it clips on something n other end pushes something in. do u know where i can buy or download a transmission manual to look at pictures of parts n all. there is no other metal in it or nothing. its not broken off or anything. so think maybe it came loose or something. trying to see if that could be y it isnt shifting outta 1st.

hi. can u send a copy of the manual for the 46re tranny to my email. it is hbkb4@aol.com. thank you. i need it asap cause i have a dodge ram 2500 2001 that does not wanna shift outta 1st n when i changed filter n fluid, there was a piece in pan that looks like it clips onto something at one end n on other end, it pushes something. only thing that was in pan. was no metal or nothing n no damage.

Well it doesnt matter if it towed or not, that just kills it faster. If you havent kept up on fluid/ filter changes, be expected to pay about 1600$ minimum, because it sounds like you need a rebuild.
