leaking trans. fliud
i recently replaced the gov. press.sensor, and lockup switch and torque converter, and pump seal on my 99 ram 1500 4x4 ( oh what fun!)....when it came to refilling the trans.. the dealer said it requires at least 12qts for a complete tran. and torque conv. fill.... so i filled it up with 12qts ... turned her on and waited for it to warm up and so i can check the fluid... when it got hot i checked the fluid and it was within acceptable specs... when i drove around the block it shifted perfect... parked it and checked the fluid and no prob. next day i wake up to a puddle of trans fluid on my drive way...wtf.... i noticed it was leaking more on the driver side than passenger side, so i feel my way around the pan and its dry.... but when i reach above the ridge where pan and tranny meet its soaked on the left side right where the shift linkage sticks out ? i havent checked or driven her since then cuz of the 3ft sq. puddle it left overnight .... i personally think i over filled the trans. and its leaking from the linkage rod is poking out of and that the dealership gave me a bogus capacity ? please help !!sorry for the long story but had to type it all lol !:icon_slap:

i think you overfilled the transmission.
12 qts is the capacity from empty, but a lot is held in the torque converter and doesn't drain. mine only requires about 6-7 qts to refill on a fluid and filter change. be sure and check the level with engine running and in NEUTRAL, not PARK. the pump doesn't run in park and you get a false level. also the silly angle on the dipstick makes it a bit hard to read. i check the level on the lowest side, which is the top side of the dipstick. the bottom also reads a good bit higher due to the angle. edit - the easiest way to remove fluid is to disconnect the BOTTOM quick-connect fitting at the radiator using a 3/8 inch tool. aim the hose in a bucket. start the truck and shift to neutral for a few seconds. beware - fluid squirts out hard and fast. |
Weren't you checking the dipstick as you poured? I have 2 coolers and a remote filter and I took 12 quarts. You over filled. Our trucks take 8-10 quarts. Take this time to install a drain plug in your pan.
