I think if you have a 5.2L and you really went bananas trying to get MPG's on the highway (3.21 gears, tonneau cover, lower the truck a bit, low rolling resistance stock sized tires, and mods that don't increase the need to introduce more fuel, but still net a mild hp gain) you might be doing really good to sniff 19-20mpgs. Take about 1 mpg off for the 5.9L.

for us average guys, 16 on the highway is probably good.

Thanks...I was just curious. It seems like getting "good" MPG for us 2nd genners is like chasing unicorns.

Was that all downhill with a tailwind? I find it difficult to believe a 4x4 achieved 20mpg. Not calling you a liar, just expressing an extreme amount of doubt. The best I ever achieved with my 5.2L 4x2 was 17.4mpg, empty, on a trip from Oklahoma to Texas. I had the kid rerun the numbers three times because I was in such disbelief.

I believe 14-15 for a 4x4 and 16-18 for a 4x2 with the correct gears for whatever size your tires are.

I have 33" tires so I'm going for 4.10 gears to get the power back to stock (stock if I had 29" tires and 3.55 gears). I used to get 14mpg when I had 32.8" tires but that was inaccurate because I didn't have a tuner to correct the tire size at the time, that's why it bugs me when I fill up because my speedometer and odometer are right now and the numbers don't look as good as they used to.

My dads 98 5.9l quad cab 4x2 gets about 16 average but he only drives to and from work most of the time and that's 80% highway.

I also have the 5.9L 360 but i still got the 20. How did i do it? I have no idea and i know on the trip back i got damn close to the 20 mark again. So I know its possible, just dont understand how i did it(could be that i was running on flat ground with the cruise and no wind plus i had my topper on.

You're doing it wrong. Many years ago, I smacked a squirrel dead center while driving a 1993 Escort Wagon. I heard a couple of thumps and observed him rocketing out from the passenger rear wheel well about 20' from the car and land in the ditch. A friend was following and reported it was one of the funniest sights to have ever witnessed.

Hey,

That was a full-on double rainbow, all the way. Worth the 3 1/2 minutes.
