Oil Pan Gasket Leak w/ PICS - How easy to drop pan and fix?
5 Attachment(s)
So I noticed oil seeping around the oil pan gasket, not alot but enough that I want to fix it (1999 1500 4x4, 5.9L, 120,000 miles).
So how hard is this to do? Is it just a matter of removing the pan bolts? The shop manual for the 2001's says: (1) Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. (2) Remove engine oil dipstick. (3) Raise vehicle. (4) Drain engine oil. (5) Remove exhaust pipe. (6) Remove left engine to transmission strut. (7) Loosen the right side engine support bracket cushion thru-bolt nut and raise the engine slightly. Remove oil pan by sliding backward and out. (8) Remove the one-piece gasket. Are 6 and 7 required???? Thanks!!! Attachment 77121 Attachment 77122 Attachment 77123 Attachment 77124 Attachment 77125 |
no, all that's wrong.
have you tried just retorquing the pan bolts. sometimes that works. if not, drain oil. remove engine to transmission braces. disconnect battery. remove starter. remove flex plate cover. remove oil pan. |
I added pics. You can see a light sheen on the oil filter.

With that much in the back it cod very well be the rear main seal. There's a write up on pavement sucks as to how to fix it. If you are removing the pan anyway, I'd replace the rear main and oil pump just as a preventative measure as you'll have the thing all apart anyway and it won't take but another hour to do.
