I'm stumped! Any help?
while chasing an oil leak, I have pulled my heads, intake, cam. All new stuff going in but besides that, I CAN NOT FIGURE OUT THE DISTRIBUTOR!! I have the cap and rotor off but I can not pull the base housing out. I have removed the hold down bolt and that little plate with the sensor on it (cam sensor?). The cam is out, but the Dist gear won't pull out or the dist shaft.
I know I don't need to remove it to slide the new cam in, but I beleive I was leaking oil from under the cap, but I can't seem to pull it 2001-2500-5.9 |
Try twisting it to loosen it up. Use penetrating oil too.

The whole thing gets removed. You cannot remove the shaft from the dist with it still in the truck. Probably the housing has just become very fond of the block, and refuses to let go. Chemicals, and some gentle persuasion is in order here.

Hey, HEY YOU! Sounds like you know a little about these motors. What do you think about the spray copper gasket with the head gaskets. Thinking of trying that stuff this time. Any thoughts? Also, I'll try to get some pics of this build going.

ohh yeahhhhh. Pop the dist out with brass hammer and channel locks. Sure enough, the o-ring is shot and thats where the leak was coming from. Now onward to the cam bearings!

Clean the block and head mating surfaces good and use Felpro gaskets. No need for any thing else.
Oh yea, and you are right, he does know a "little" about these motors. :) |
Agree with zman on the head gaskets. Back in the olden days, stuff like that was necessary, however, in these 'modern'.... times, machining is much more accurate, so, the stuff really isn't needed, and can actually cause you problems.
