Default 1995 Ram - Throttle/transmission cable return spring

1995 Ram with transmission shifting too late here. Original thread here:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...high-rpms.html

Changing the fluid/filter right now (washed the pan, taking a breather while it's drying). While under there, noticed this:

The throttle cable has a return spring that does not return the cable i.e. it seems that the spring is too weak. It wants to return the cable but it is not strong enough. If I help it a little, it contracts all the way.

Is this a problem?

Can THIS cause delayed shifting?

Can/should the spring be replaced?

That is a problem.

Throttle and transmission valve cables are cantilevered, so when it doesn't work, it affects them both.

Don't know if just the spring is replaceable, or if you need a whole new TB. Any 3.9l, 5.2l, or 5.9l magnum engine at a junk yard has the same TB.

Isn't the spring external to the trans? (or am I remember the wrong vehicle underside?)

Yes it is external and it comes out real easy.

On one side of my spring 5 of the coils are "stretched out"

I am thinking if there isn't a specific replacement part, I will look at my local Ace Hardware, they have a big cabinet with all kinds of springs. I assume that the spring should always retract the cable all the way... so, as long as the tension is not excessive, a slightly shorter replacement spring that has "roughly the same tension" will work... right?

Where is this "transmission speed sensor" located?

It's not the one that is towards the end of the tranny -- this one is different.

Any spring of about the same length, and tension (maybe just a bit more...) would work. Keep in mind, you don't wanna put a really hefty one there, as you will have to step harder on the go pedal to overcome that tension. Hardware store spring should be fine.

What sensor is it??

Default sensors, sensors everywhere

According to autozone, this is the "vehicle speed sensor", and I do have it, on the driver's side, towards the end of the tranny. I suspect that it feeds the speedo and that replacing it would be a waste of money because my speedo works fine.

According to their site, this is the "transmission speed sensor", and I can't find where it is; or if I even have it in a 1995 5.2L 1500:

There are also two more sets of wires going to the tranny, both are right where the linkage is connected. I know that one of them is the neutral/backup switch, and I don't know what the other one is.

VSS, and trans speed sensor are one and the same part. Their job duties changed over the years, so, prolly the name changed as well. Starting in 98 (I think) vehicle speed was read off of the rear wheel speed sensor on the diff. (might have been an advent of the 00 model year as well, not entirely sure.)

But, you will have one. Not two.

No, the spring is on the transmission. I will replace and report my results here.
