'99 318 Ram needs more go
Hey guys, me and my buddy are looking to do some work on his Truck. Its a 1999 stock, 318 auto 2x4 long box regular cab with 3:55 open gears. From a dead stop putting it to the floor does nothing, no chirps or anything. We really want to smoke these tires from a stop, no foot braking ****, all torque. It's a daily driver, and occasionally will be hauling. We are on a really tight budget, thinking about $500. I was thinking keep it cheap and from the Y pipe back have a 3" pipe all the way back, through some flowmaster 40's or something, and out the side. What i would really like to do is swap the gears and put some 4:10's or a set of 4:56. I know we have the Chrysler 9.25 out back, so do you guys know where to get a good set of gears for a good price? I checked the local ad's to see if there was a 9.25 with good gears, and there weren't even any stock ones. So I was wondering what other axles would swap in without issue? Some dana 44's or 35's or something? Any specific years? I mean just a bolt and play deal. If anyone else has some idea's I am all ears man.
Thanks, Adam
Thanks, Adam

Start by reading this https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...um-thread.html
You can get 3.92 gears from Mopar performance for $192 part number P4529272AB, after that SCT tuner to get ride of the death flash.

We aren't new to wrenching. I am in college to become a mechanic. We've wrenched on things since we where 7. I am restoring a 81 Trans am with a 455, 4 speed, and 3:73 posi. We've swapped the engine and tranny on the ram. We've pulled the bed, replaced half the floor in the truck, drivers rocker, and both cab corners. By NO stretch of the imagination are we new to this game. Instead of doing the usual extensive research on the best bang for the buck, I thought I would come ask the dodge guys, that's what the forum is for right? Asking questions? I can pick 4:10 gears up for a dana 44 with spending just $50 bucks. Or the whole axle for 100, all local used. Now if anyone could tell me what year dana 44 would fit I would appreciate it. Any other performance idea's? Thanks to the couple of guys who actually contributed

There never was a Dana 44 under the back of these trucks, so if you plan on putting one under the back it would be a custom install. Dana 44 is in the front of all 1500 4x4 and Dana 60 in the 2500. You could find a rear Dana 60-80 out of a 2500 or 3500 but that will also need some custom fab work as well. So find a good used set of gears for the Mopar 91/4 rear that is the cheap way to go.
