Truck dies while driving then won't start right away

Alright guys I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 5.2 5 speed. I'll be driving down the road and the truck will just turn off and won't start back up for about 5 mins. The truck turns over but it's not firing. I've swapped out the ASD relay and it's still doing it. When the truck turns off the gas gauge, battery and temp gauge aren't reading anything. Any help would be awesome thanks!!!

Robertm1212 08-10-2012 09:30 PM

Replaced the coil still the same any ideas guys? I'm thinking it's the computer....

HeyYou 08-11-2012 02:42 PM

After it quits the first time, how long will it last before it quits again?

zman17 08-11-2012 03:45 PM

Now this is most likely the crank sensor.

zman17 08-11-2012 03:48 PM

On a side note, I just noticed the OP started 2 threads about the same issue! WHY ?????

Robertm1212 08-11-2012 05:34 PM

Some times it starts right up other times it takes about 5 to 10 mins

zman17 08-12-2012 10:52 AM

Seems like you'll have to try whats been suggested in your threads.

Robertm1212 08-12-2012 09:08 PM

This is the only tread I've started. I was replying to heyyou's post. I've orded a crank sensor so I am trying everything bro.

zman17 08-13-2012 02:07 PM

Real sorry bud, if you look back a day or so, you'll see another Robert posted basically the same question on the same day as you posted yours. My bad, sorry again. ;)

Robertm1212 08-13-2012 07:41 PM

It's cool bro

zman17 08-14-2012 02:59 PM

So did you try the things suggested in your threads? ;)

Robertm1212 08-31-2012 11:33 AM

Yes and it's still doing it. Anyone know where I can pick up a used computer?

Have you tested fuel pressure? You can test it right at fuel rail and should be around 49psi...

Assuming you've replaced the crank sensor. The # for the PCM you want is the # after where it says Chrysler in your pic. You can get a PCM with the same #'s with the last 2 letters being different. Yours has AD at the end . That's the important part of the P/N. If you find a PCM with the same #'s and those 2 letters at the end are AF for instance, it should work good enough to get you to the dealer so they can flash the PCM.

And btw, I can't find it right now, but Merc225 has posted cross reference #'s for the PCM's. Maybe he will chime in.

Robertm1212 08-31-2012 06:22 PM

I have swapped the crank senor. It's getting worse like shutting off every 15mins I drive and it's taking longer for it to turn back on.

Is there anyone on here that repairs them?

HeyYou 09-01-2012 08:21 AM

Need to find out what's missing when it won't start, spark, or fuel.

zman17 09-01-2012 01:20 PM

PCM could be bad or you have a defective crank sensor.

corvetteed 09-01-2012 01:33 PM

Mine Stalls too

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 also. It quits very often but starts right back up. It runs like there is someone turning the truck off and on then it dies. I have replaced the fuel pump assy and also the computer. There are no codes showing on the dash. Help

I have posted cross reference number's for pcm's but I have lost that sheet due to a HDD failure and a bad pc opt for not backing his info up.

I will see if I can find it again.

Next Part

I'm going to replace the crank sensor. Amazon has them for $16 and change. Regular price is $50, it's a great deal.

HeyYou 09-02-2012 04:11 PM

It's only a great deal if it actually works........

sbulla 09-02-2012 07:49 PM

My 2K 5.9 had similar symptoms and it ended up being the PCM. I replaced it with one from Auto Computer Exchange for about half the price of a new one and, it's run fine since.

Good luck,
Sonny

Robertm1212 09-02-2012 09:00 PM

I had the same problem on my V8 Ram Van. I wiggled the right most connector and it worked for a few days. Then the "no bus" - no start message; Wiggled again - okay for a few days...... Eventually figured out that there is a bad connector in the PCM. Ordered a new one from Auto Computer Exchange - installed it - everything works 100% again

Robertm1212 09-03-2012 12:58 PM

I've tried that also and it was still doing it.

corvetteed 09-04-2012 08:53 AM

Codes

How do you stop throwing parts at the problem when the computer won't give you a code to fix the problem ???

HeyYou 09-04-2012 09:45 AM

Depends on what the problem is.

stef300ex 09-04-2012 02:26 PM

I have 1995 ram 1500 5.2L and I have same problem !!!! the engine stalls any time. I wait a few minutes and I am able to start. I do not know what to do !! :(

Figure out what's missing when it won't start.

peshewa 09-04-2012 09:28 PM

The crank sensor, the coil & most sensors are packed in hard epoxy resin. When it is all totally cooled off, if it starts right up then poops out after warming up, then consider that anything with a hairline crack where you cant see it may spread open as it expands with heat causing it to run no more, then after it cools off & contracts again, the connections are back to where they need to be to fire off allowing it to start & run. This is really common on GM coil packs - they can bench test fine while cool, but get warm on the engine causing this exact issue. The PCM would be the last thing I would suspect. Crank sensor & ignition coil are my 2 top choices for the real issue.

Robertm1212 09-05-2012 12:42 PM

I swapped both those out on mine and it still did it. I knew it had to be something with the PCM from the get go bc it wasn't throwing a code and none of my gauges were working until the truck started back up.

becraftc 12-28-2012 11:31 PM

Hey Robert, did you ever find the problem? I am having the same problem. I was looking to change the fuel pump/crank/cam sensor but wanted to see what your problem was if it was fixed.

RedTruckDaddy13 01-05-2013 06:58 PM

I had the same problem with my truck. I had to replace the alternator. It runs fine now.

EthanJohns 01-06-2013 12:01 AM

I literally just went through all this funness with my truck. im no tech or anything im just going by what ive done.. check ur battery, check ur alternator. a bad battery and some dumbness were what was wrong with mine.

becraftc 01-06-2013 11:56 AM

Sorry, forgot about this thread. It was the TPS sensor. I started wiggling wires under the hood and when I wiggled the wires to the TPS sensor it started to die. Replaced the sensor and fixed the issue. I also posted a vid on YouTube for anyone else that may have difficulty replacing it.
