Gutting a catalytic converter, how'd you do it?
So I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to gut my cat. I feel that my truck is sluggish compared to other 5.2s iv drivin. I am also going to be doin a Hughes plenum fix and all the works that come with that repair.
Anyways my question is how do you guys normally gut the cat? Last time I did it to my car the cat was already off the car. I don't want to have to completely cut it off, I was thinking about cutting the one side of the exhaust off so I could stick a pipe in. Smash that pipe with a BFH, then start the truck to clear out all the guts, and keep repeating! Then weld the exhaust back up when I'm done. How do you guys think this would work? Or did you do it another way? And no I don't want to replace the cat with a new piece of pipe. I want it to look like I still have a cat. Please no bitchin and moaning about gutting the stock cat, thanks for your input! |
You kind of already answered your own question here... There's only two ways to do it. Either way will work.
I just unclamped my muffler then took a long wrench and broke the insides into 3 pieces. Pulled 'em out by using two wrenches as chopsticks. |
Ya kinda just wanted some confirmation lol. And to see if anyone had troubles this way.

I beat the hell outta mine with a shop hammer and cranked her at 4000 Rpm and blew the dust out to be one with the environment.Beautiful!!!

If you keep the pieces intact you can sell them for $

Take out the front O2 before you start beating away, that will prevent you from destroying it. :)

When I got my truck the po had cut the side and pulled the guys out then welded the hole back up lol.
|
Or you could do it the correct way and cut it out and weld a length of pipe in instead.

M100? lol

I removed my exhaust, chopped the cat off, gutted it, welded it back on and installed the exhaust back on.
I didnt have a straight pipe and did it the night before I had to be at the airport so I didnt have a lot of time to get it done. |
