NV3500 sliping out of gear when parked

Alright guys i have a 99 1500 sport 4x4 with the NV3500 manual trans and when my parking brake decided to snap i put it in gear when i turned it off to park it and it kept slipping and rolling back (while parked on a hill). i haven't had any problems though driving. truck has 160000 bought back at 148,000. what do you all think

Timothy Watrous 04-19-2013 04:02 PM

easy fix, fix the parking brake...

QuadCabLuv 04-19-2013 04:09 PM

That's what I was thinking. LOL

I'm sure jigabop will chime in. He has a lot of experience with these and breaking them.

It still shouldn't happen. Dumb question but I have to ask: Are you putting it in a forward gear when facing uphill, and reverse when downhill? If so, then it has to be the clutch.

I'm not greatly familiar with manual transmissions but if you use 1st as the parking brake isn't it engine compression that actually keeps the vehicle from rolling?

Truck weighs upward of 5000 pounds. That gear is not gonna hold it back on a hill. Find a flat place to park or chock the wheels

Thornloe Pride 04-19-2013 11:17 PM

^exactly. Fix park brake or at least chock the wheels for now.

Yes that is how it works.

As long as it doesn't pop out of gear, that will be plenty to keep the truck from moving. But higher miles means worn syncros. I agree the real fix here is to repair the parking brake.

i'm surprised my dakota never rolled away. i always left that thing in 1st, since the ebrake never worked.
