Default 2002 Ram 5.9 is 5.5 quarts too much oil?

I just purchased a truck a month ago. Did my first oil change today with mobile 1 synthetic. I have read on here it takes 5.5 quarts but i also have read it just takes 5 quarts. anyone do their own oil changed and how much do you put in? I would of measured the amount that came out but i already had oil in my oil bucket. I put 5.5 in but I have yet to drive it as it is my weekend warrior. I can easily drain .5 but what is your take?

What does the dipstick say? If it's in the safe zone it's fine. Above by 1/16" or less, it's fine. Any more and you'll have to drain some.

Personally I'd drain a little to be safe. Next time dump about 4.5 quarts, start and let run for 30-45 seconds to fill the filter, shut off, wait 2-3 minutes for oil to drain back to pan and top off as needed.

if the motor has an aftermarket oil pan(spectre) it will take 5.5-6 qts.

but in most cases.... its 5 qts.

Pull the filter, dump it out, reinstall it. Run engine for a couple minutes, recheck oil level. If it is still high, do it again.

That's because the tube for dipstick in the spectre oil pan is routed wrong, not because the pan itself holds more oil. 5 qts is it.
