Little help?

Hey guys, I almost got this nv4500 up in there but I ran into a mind bender. the transmission is open on the back, but it the transfercase open to the transmission? Am I supposed to put my oil in the trans, mate them, then put atf in the transfer case? This is my only hold up at the second. everything else is just about done.

T-case is sealed. So, different fluids shouldn't mix. Use some RTV on the mating surfaces though, to prevent trans leaks.

what fluid should I use, where do I fill it, and how do I know when its to proper level? I'm not used to servicing the tcase as you can tell. lol

You've been a member for 3 years and haven't downloaded the free factory service manual? It gives you all that info without having to wait for people's response on here.

There's only two plugs on the tcase, located on the rear end of it. Fill plug is at the top, drainers on the bottom. Make sure you use the correct size hex or you'll strip it. Don't recall what it is off the top of my head, sorry. Fill it with ATF+4 (auto tranny fluid). Just pour it in until it starts to come out of the fill hole, the FSM gives you the exact amount.

As for the tranny, it should take the pennzoil synchromesh manual trans fluid. Procedure is the same as the tcase. Fill it after it's installed unless you want the trans to be unnecessarily heavy to lift.

The tranny should NOT have the Penzoil fluid.

- 75W-90 Castrol Syntorque Synthetic
- Mopar Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant Mopar P/N 4874459 (Material Specification 9070)
- GM Goodwrench® Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 12346190, in Canada 10953477)
- Or the Amsoil fluid specifically recommended for the NV4500, has to be GL4, NOT GL5.

If you use any other fluid than those 4 listed above you will damage the syncros. The NV4500 has special synchronizers, and so needs special fluid that does NOT have the high-pressure additive found in GL5 and most syncromesh fluids. Not all GL4 fluids will work either. Any in this list are tried and true and will not damage the transmission.

Edit: Matt, the NV3500 takes different fluid than the NV4500 FYI. That's why not just any syncromesh fluid will work.

Ive had some problems down loading the manual. And farrell, you can also use lucas 75w-90 mixed with lucas hd oil stabilizer and it lowers the gl content to safe levels for our synchros. Its been tried and works.
