death wobble

I know there millions of threads about death wobble but this is kinda unique, first started off with when I would hit a bump I would get the death wobble, which I had my uncle look at it who's a mechanic who agreed with me on thinking it was the track bar, looked like a lot of play in it. Tried greasing the frame end and didn't help. But now it does it when I brake. Damn thing sent me into a field when I went to go through a turn. Does anyone still think it's the track bar? In August I have a 150 mile drive to school and the same drive back every weekend and I'm almost certain it will kill me one day if not fixed. There are just way too many causes for this problem in this ****ty steering setup. If I can't fix it I'm going to have to sell it for something reliable. I don't have the money to replace the whole front end. Thanks in advance

Replace the track bar if it's even marginal. Inspect EVERYTHING else, and replace anything that is suspect.

Take your track bar off and turn your steering wheel. See if you want your truck to that going 70mph down the highway.

If so put your old back one on.

If not replace it with a 150 dollar moog track bar.

I was looking at the moog, I went out and looked at the track bar again, I can push the joint on the frame in and out, and it also has excessive movement when turning the wheel with the truck off, I think I'm taking a guess on the track bar, everything else seems tight

It's not a guess if the thing moves at all. much less obvious movement

The thing is the previous owner replaced it last year, but it was duralast. I just find it so hard to believe it went bad before a year, and he said when he replaced it There was still play in the bar. I'm getting a moog at advance tomorrow and putting it in, hopefully it fixes it. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that it happens when I brake too, but track bar seems pretty bad so fingers crossed

They've been known to wear out like that before. Be sure to torque properly to spec. Track bar should not move. hopefully you just got a dud.

On the frame it's 70ft/lbs abs 130 ft/lbs on the axle right?

Ham Bone 07-08-2014 09:41 PM

yep. If the cotter pin doesnt line up then torque a little extra

If you could, take a video or some pictures for us? Doesn't have to be too detailed or anything, just might be interesting to see for those of us that hope to not have to do this anytime soon!
