Lost T/C Lockup for the second time *Help*
 
Ok before I give up all hope for this truck I am hoping that reaching out to the forum someone might have a idea. First the truck is a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 with a 5.2 Magnum and a 46RE transmission. This is not the original transmission, I myself changed it when I purchased the truck. And checked over the o/d. Everything was fine. All fluids and filters have been changed. I have removed the valve body three times now trying to figure out what is causing this. The third time I disassembled and reassembled it according to the service manual. This did not correct the issue. I then removed the transmission and slid it back enough to replace the Torque converter with a spare one I had from the other transmission. While sliding the transmission back and trying to get it back into place for reinstall the transmission slipped and was banged around (Not sure if this is relevant). Upon assembly the torque converter lockup was back. And all was good. Now the same thing happened not even a week after replacing the T/C, And it has only stopped locking up after flooring it to pass both the first T/C and now this one. Could it be that the T/C has failed? There was no obvious signs in the oil that the old one had failed when I drained the trans prior to removal. I am lost, Never herd of flooring a truck killing the T/C

The stock torque converters were notoriously weak from the factory. That said.... it shouldn't fail that easily. Have you replace the TCC solenoid on the valve body? Is the electrical portion working properly? Getting any other codes??

I have replaced the Solenoid with another spare I had when i had the valve body out, Made no difference, No codes to speak of either. No obvoius signs other then the RPM no dropping, TV Cable has been adjusted as well. What gets me is that maybe the jarring of me dropping it while doing the T/C made it work instead of a different T/C?

Since you have been thru the valve body, and a couple solenoids...... and the reputation these torque converters have for being crappy......

If you didn't find anything untoward in the valve body, everything moved smoothly, no scored bores/valves, etc. I would take a good hard look at the T/C. Again.

Also, The RPM does drop very littler after O/D kicks in and drops the RPM, Like the T/C is trying to lock but can't and if I tap the brake pedal just enough to kick the lights on the RPM does go up very little. How can I inspect the T/C? Also is there any way to force it to lockup other then the tapping into the orange and black wire trick?

RPM will only change by about 200 or so with TCC lock/unlock. Are you sure it isn't actually working as it should? You get the major RPM drop when the trans shifts into O/D.

Go someplace where you have a fair bit of straight road, that isn't very busy. Accelerate slowly up to about 50 mph, and pay attention to the shifts. Should feel three pretty significant shifts, and then TCC.

It used to drop to a little above the 1000 mark after the od and t/c kicked in. Now I notice there is lots of slop per say in the rpm after o/D which would mean the t/c is not locking up no? Also jumping that wire makes no difference in the rpm

Should be around 12-1300 RPM at 45 mph in O/D, with TCC engaged.

If stepping lightly on the brake, bumps RPM up a couple hundred, that is TCC disengaging. (above 45 mph)

Do you have 12 volts on your test wire?

Rpms are at 2000 doing 55mph
