Abrupt Stall

My '95 1500 5.9 4wd stalled this am while driving. Upon attempted restart, it tries to kick over, but stumbles and stalls. Battery is strong and spinning the starter. Throttle body is sucking air, it appears. Plugs and wires are not that old and there is no popping like you would get with a bad wire. Spark appears present since it does try to start. Almost seems as the fuel is not getting there. No oil or water leak. Everything appears normal.

I did not see a fuel leak. It was raining a bit this am so I would have seen it on the ground. The rain also made for a nice push.

I would check fuel pressure, if you dont have a gauge turn the key to on and and use something to push down on the schrader valve, like an angled pick and use a rag over the valve, be careful! gas should spray out, if it just dribbles out theres your problem.

A bad crank shaft position sensor can cause the problem your having.

It started today after sitting for several days and ran for only about 15 seconds. I did the pressure check as noted and I got a quick squirt of about 1 inch high then dribbles after that. Is this evidence that the fuel pump is shot? I guess the other problem could be the fuel line, but there is no leak or break in the line that I can see.

Ram Driver - I am guessing the crank position sensor would not allow it to start like it did this am. What do you think?

The crank position sensor can go bad in several ways. It can just go bad and quit working, or, sometimes you can wiggle the wiring coming out of it and the engine will miss or stall. But in your situation and checking the fuel pressure it seems that your fuel pump may have gone bad.

Think I would put a gauge on it, before just condemning the pump..... can probably rent one from the local parts store.

Ok. I will get a gauge and check it. As I understand it, I should see between 35 and 45 psi at the valve on the rail. Will get back to you with what I find.

sounds like it maybe the pump, but i would do what HeyYou said and get a gauge to check the pressure to be sure, autozone rents out the gauges.

The pressure gauges I have found only go up to 15 psi. Am I correct that the line pressure should be 35 psi minimum? The manual quotes a 35-45 psi reading at the injector, but is that the same as the reading on the rail?
