Exclamation 2wd to 4x4 conversion?

I have a 99 1500 that hardly runs with 4x4.

I recently just added a 98.5 24v 2500 to my truck collection. I know this is probably a long shot but would the transfer case on the 99 1500 work on my 98.5 CTD?

Anything else I should consider??

The transfer case is the least of your problems. You are trying to convert a 2500 2WD into a 4X4? You know the frame is different right? 2500's don't use a dana 44. How do you plan on putting in the front axle?

It depends what the transmission is as that will indicate output spline count and size (diameter/length).

however, stock tcase for a cummins is a 241. Find one that came from behind the same tranny you have. However, it being 2wd from the thread title, you'll need to add a tailhousing.

And quite possibly the output shaft as well.

That said, I don't think a 231 would last very long behind a diesel...... the D44 out of the half-ton sure wouldn't...... at least, I would be very reluctant to go there..... That's a LOT of additional weight.

Think it would be easier to find a 3/4 ton 4x4, and drop the diesel into that.

I'm fully aware bud. Was wondering on the fitment. You're replies are literally so indirect and useless 95% of the time. Get a clue about what your actually talking about so I don't have to scroll down on a waste of text. Thanks.

To anyone else who actually replied with useful information thank you. Rather than stating I need more than a transfer case.

Lighten up dude.....................................Getting your tighty whitey's in a twist isn't helping anyone. And is making you look like a total ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

What type of tranny in each rig? Manual or Auto? No the transfer case in your 1500 is a NP231 and the type of transfer case you need behind your CTD is a NP241.
What else should you consider? Your going to need more than a transfer case!!!!

You are better off to sell the 2wd CTD and buy a 4wd or sell the CTD and get the 1500 running if a 4wd is what you want. This is one of those questions that if you really have to ask then trying to do this on your own might not be such a great idea.

So to answer your very naïve question- NO IT WILL NOT WORK

Would it be possible for him to find some Dana 60/70 axles and swap them onto his 1500 truck, and swap his Cummins engine, tranny (with new tailhousing), and a NP241 onto it?

Based on the limited info you provided, the response I provided is appropriate. Post a vague, noob sounding question, expect the same kind of response. I don't try to read minds.

Nv231 pass
Nv241 pass
NV271 thats what I would be looking at.

This swap/conversion from 2wd to 4wd has been done here on Df search for it.
