Hi there .. just here to ask what tranny and torque convertor i have for a 99 ram 2500 5.9 v8 gas 4x4 --- this is the number off the sticker --- 52118 156 385954 1 a4 b2 ?

I have yet to find a good source for decoding those numbers..... but, your trans is a 46RE.

Looking to rebuild/replace?

High rpm before shifting into 2nd but if ease up on the pedal just a touch it will shift .. than sometimes after shifting into 2nd it will drop back down to first and go high rpm .. but after that it shifts perfect from 2nd up can barely tell it shifts .. just that problem between first and second ... filter and fluid have been changed

Probably just a sensor issue. You can get heavy duty governor pressure solenoid, and a pressure sensor for about 100 bucks from ebay. (borg warner parts, several vendors sell them) That generally solves the issue, and is cheaper than a rebuild/replacement. :D

If you are brave, you can test that theory....... just unplug the 8 pin connector going straight down into the top of the valve body for the internal electronics. The trans will have zero automatic function though, and no TCC, or O/D..... you will have to shift manually. If it does into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, then just replacing the electronics should solve it.

Have you adjusted your bands??? That wouldn't hurt either. (of course, one of the adjusters is IN the trans..... )

Have not touched the bands or the selenoids / sensors yet as i am not very transmission savy ...ive been told to many things that it could be

Run the test I outlined above. That should tell you if its a mechanical, or electronic problem. Doing the solenoid/sensor set really isn't bad. They are both right up under (over?) the filter. Easy to get to, easy to change.

I won't shift down into 1st with that test without a different shift timing valve in the upper VB... He could go grab a cheap oil pressure gauge and check his governor pressure. There's several 1/8" pipe taps in the case for various pressure checks, you'll be looking for the one on the passenger side up high on the back of the front case. You'll see what I mean once you're under there, the case splits in the middle and at that split is where you'll be looking. You want to see approximately 1 psi per mph you're travelling.

I'll bet that HeyYou is right, it's just that the pressure gauge is the best way to definitively test it. The upgraded Borg-Warner governor pressure solenoid is a nice piece, I've been using them for years because they handle the increased pressures after I modify the VB for more holding capacity in diesel trucks... Which btw, if you're feeling particularly brave, I would suggest getting a Transgo TFOD-Jr shift kit for your truck and install it. Super simple install on those that makes a nice little difference in the performance and expected lifespan of your trans. A band adjustment isn't a terrible idea either, I have a sneaky suspicion your 2nd gear band is a touch loose.
