2001 Dodge Ram 2500 rear end?
Hello, i purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab short bed 5.9l Magnum, nv4500 5speed manual transmission and 4x4 has 4.10s. I managed to blow out the rear for a second time :icon_warped: and i got lucky and my buddy had the rear i needed so we just swapped it over, but ive been trying to find a set of spiders to replaced the grenaded ones. I was under the assumption that it was a dana 70 rear but im having no luck finding anything for it. The sticker in the glove box says Front axle #5200, Rear Axle #6200, Axle Differential Limited-slip, and if it is a dana 70 im not sure if its a 70, 70HD, or a 70U. Any help finding the parts or finding out what axle it is is much appreciated :icon_bunny:

Are you sure? I feel like that's a bit small for a 2500 especially with the nv4500. I pulled a rear out of a 2500 single cab long bed automatic v8 and it was significantly smaller then the rear in my truck. That one looked more like a D60 but at this point i have no idea |
What year was the donor rear out of? For a couple model years, dodge offered the 'light duty' 3/4 ton, that just had beefed up 1500 axles in it......
How did you manage to blow up a D60?? I would be tempted to go with 4.56 gears, and a detroit true trac. |

Going to 4.56 gears and 35's may actually HELP your gas mileage, and acceleration. Of course, the engine will be turning a bit higher RPM for any given speed than previously.... but, it won't have to work as hard to get it there.
If wheel hop is blowing up spider gears and such, you are definitely doing something wrong....... or, got a marginal rear in the first place..... I have almost 200,000 miles on mine, and the only thing I have had to do to it, is the pinion seal..... If you continue to abuse it, you can look forward to having to replace it again. That's just how it works. |

I've been tossing the idea of switching out the gears around since i purchased it..... The truck it self has roughly 3.5-4 lift on it with 35's. Lifting coils in the front and blocks in the rear. It rides rough as hell, I wanted to put the stock 2500 springs in the front with 2-3 leveling spacers, with the same size block in the rear with 33's instead of 35's...... I wanted to originally swap 3.54 gears, then thought about 3.73's. But then i thought about leaving it 4.10 and just putting 33's under it....Its a thought, i've never messed with this before my first ram 1500 was stock everything and was a 318 5 speed with 3.55 gears so it was a blast |
My truck is still stock ride height, all stock suspension, with 265/75/16 tires, and it rides rough when not loaded too. :) That's gonna be standard for a 3/4 ton truck..... Those springs are indeed stiff. Put a thousand pounds of dirt in the bed though, and it rides like a cadillac. (fuel economy suffers though.......)

As for the current situation where would be the best place to find the spiders so I can get the beast back on the road again. I was trying to find Yukon spiders or anything at this point but I'm having no luck finding what I need. Every set I find is for a open diff not for a trac-lok. Would I be better off just getting a rear off ebay thats pulled out of a truck already? Im tight on money and would rather not spend over 500 and I'm not having much luck. :( |
Maybe a used one out of junkyards in your area? Finding one that has the parts you need might be fun though...... Dodge Dealer?
Something else you may consider is one of the 'lockers' that actually replace the spider gears. Might be cheaper than dealer parts in any event. |
There's a u-pull-it 10 minutes from my work, which is where i went the last time and pulled that rear which i thought was for mine but seems to be the light duty rear for the 2500 like you said earlier, dodges are hard to find there and when they are there, they are stripped apart.

That's what i was thinking too, it also seems like it would be an easier install then the other one....:icon_goofygrin:
And the koozie will be much use to keep my cola nice and cool! I appreciate the help it was much needed!! And will have to order this once I get home! :icon_dance-twist: |
