Gear change?

I have a 94 ram 1500 ..5.9L auto 70k miles and it has 3.55s on chrysler 9.25 rear and same in Dana 44 front. I want 4.10s or alittle bit better gear for hauling but someone told me to fit 4.10s u gotta change the carrier. So would it be easier to get new axels? And how hard is it to change the ring and pinion if it is can just do that. Someone said backlash is hard to get right on these. What can I fit if I can't do 4.10s without changing axel

What size tires are you running?

You can do 4.10's without changing the carrier, you just need to get the thick cut gears. Not that open carriers for these are all that expensive.

Changing gears, on the other hand, is a complex, and exacting job. If you have never done it before, you would most likely be much happier paying someone else to do it.... Or, if you have a friend that knows what they are doing, and would be willing to help you, that would work as well.

Changing gears in both axles is prolly going to run 1500 bucks or so, (parts included) if you pay someone else to do it...... So, if you can find a pair of axles, with the correct gears already in there for less.... might be a better option. The off-road edition trucks came stock with 4.10's, and gusseted axles as well. Only made from 00-01 though, so, finding them can be an exercise. Finding axles with 4.10s from a 'regular' truck will probably be just as much fun.

I'm running 265-70r17 . Overdrive is so long I'm at like 1700rpms on the highway and I live in very mountainous area so lots of steep grades on the highway. And it downshifts to 3rd and screams And if I turn OD off on the highway it's at like 2900rpms. Which is too high for my likeing. I would like 4.10s so I could go to a 285 or maby alittle bit bigger tire. And be alittle better in overdrive on the highway if I stay with current tire size. Like everyone is saying it's hard to get everything exact so paying someone is still a risk. I would think that the 2500s would have different gears for hauling. Idk thou. I know it will make a huge difference in the truck. My truck has a limited slip rear and universals in the front. Do I have to find one with Universals in the front? And I like the limited slip rear so . I'll never find what I need probably. Probably best to go buy a cummins or v10 if I'm gonna haul anything extreme

My 2500 came with 265/75/16's, and 3.55 gears.... 4.10's were an option.... It shifts into O/D at right about 45mph, which drops engine RPM to around 1200.... WAY to low in my opinion... even at 1500, the engine feels like it is working too hard... But then, my truck is anything but new..... and does have almost 200K miles on it. The Ford Super Duty 2500 I drove (work truck) ran smoothly at 1500 RPM, at 55 mph. Smooth as glass.... but, it has about 150K less miles on it too.... (not to mention being a totally different truck......)

For my part, I think 285/75/16's, with 4.10s would be just about right for the type of driving I do. (mostly just a daily driver, with occasional duty of hauling dirt/trailer/whathaveyou.) Your mileage may vary. :)

I think a 2500 with a V-10 would be awesome. It would do ANYTHING I wanted it to, and pass everything, except the gas station. :) But, if I drive 5000 miles in a year, I went a long way. :D

I agree... my 1500 came with the same gears/tire combo... the manual trans has a shift indicator light on the dash reminding you when to shift... I always thought that came 'on' at a way too low RPM.
It seemed to learn my driving/shift habits, and came 'on' less often over the years... when I had the dash out last, I pulled the bulb.

I found a v10 alittle rough around the rear fenders. But it has 4.10s in it . It says on the sticker under the hood. I can get it for about 2500$. It need some work. It sat for a while. Body repare. Some motor maintance to get it running better. I think I'll just buy it and lift it and bigger tires. And be happy with where my truck is. It had 40k original miles on it and now has 70k. So it's basically show room condition. I did a cold air intake. A nice exhaust. Newer alloy 17s. So it's about done. I'll make that v10 my new project truck and it will easily haul anything I need. It's a 2500 series with lots of power so I'll keep my 1500 5.9 for daily driver and make the 2500 v10 my hauling truck. Anyone have experience with a v10. What kind of power can I expect from my 5.9 v8 to a 8.0 v10. I've hauled over my rated weight in my truck and trailer it got the job done just fine. But struggled.alittle. I've heard that with 4.10s the 5.9 can haul pretty much anything just fine. I mean is it worth the difference for a whole new truck. Considering the other factors. Mines in such good condition. If I haul daily with it. It's good take its toll

Gotta look at the towing capacity of the 3/4 ton truck too. It is head and shoulders above the half-ton. Running gear is significantly beefier as well. keep in mind though, some of the electrical parts for the 95 and older trucks are getting hard to find. 96 and up can get a nice bump in power with just a tuner. I regularly see these trucks for sale around here, with north of 200K miles on them, and they still run/drive/shift great.

just go 4:56, itll leave you a lot room for tire increase. not to mention some serious improved torque

jrox44 03-06-2016 05:34 PM

Im gonna stay with 265 -70- r 17s. I was thinking it might be easier on the tranny with higher gears. But i just I don't wanna ruin my truck. It's mint condition. I live in Pennsylvania too(rust belt) It's was still a baby in mileage when I got it at 40k miles if I take care of it. It should last me a while. I don't wanna go tearing it all apart. I think I'll just get a beat up 2500 cummins or v10 for cheap and then i can use it when I need to haul our work trailer or car trailer. And make a it my new project truck.

zildjian3707 03-07-2016 11:46 PM

ya my 4:56s really helped the tranny, it doesnt really even try to shift now. like butta, mostly.
