Hey guys

Looks like I got a engine oil leak(very light)
It seems to be dripping from the oil pan gasket. But oil pan looks pretty clean and I tightened the bolts after 1000 km

Here is a list of the project
Did it in 24 hours with a buddy working with me over 2 days

We did
1. Front Axle inner seals (SKF)
2. Ball joints both side (XRF)
3. Axle Ujoints (Spicer)
4. Pull front diff axle carrier
5. Wheel hub assemblies on front with bearings
6. Put that all back together. Fill diff
7. Service transfer case
8. Rear end axle bearing and seals (National)
9. Rear pinion seal (National)
10. Put it back together fill diff
11. Intake plenum gasket on top of engine with plenum plate (Hughes Kit)
12. Water pump
13. Thermostat
14. Timing chain and engine sprockets
15. Timing chain gasket and crank seal
16. Oil pan gasket (Tore after removing timing cover, little swearing when it happened hah)
17. Put it all together
18. Change engine oil and filter
19. Fill coolant
20. Front End Alignment

Truck fired. Ran good

Test drive and checked multiple times on day 3
No visible leaks.
Checked next day on hoist during engine alignment
No visible leaks or anything abnormal

Drove 850 KM. Got home and parked truck
Notice small donut sized stain on the street next morning. Looked under truck
Seen light oil leak on cross member under front of the engine
Wiped everything clean. Drove again
Same location. Cross member under front pulleys

Completely wiped everything again. Retighten oil pan screws, very little play noticed

Test drive again. Little oil on cross member
Noticed a drop on the bottom of the front oil pan gasket at the bottom

Now I'm just hoping this is a little normal. It will go away but I got my doubts
We did everything the best we could. No rushing. Surfaces cleaned nicely
Zip disk does just great work for cleaning surfaces

Looking for opinions and input on this. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but we did a ton of work in 2 days. Transmission gets done tomorrow morning

My buddy and me talked and think it can be only three possible things
New crank seal, oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket

I seriously don't want to take this apart again lol
I'm thinking to check over the bolts. Tighten them and check for loose bolts

When you replaces the oil pan gasket, did you use any RTV in the corners by the timing cover gasket? It's recommended that you put some there.

 

Front crank seal?

 

When you installed the new front main seal, did you use the optional sleeve?

The kit I used from Napa included it but the groove on the crank wasn't that bad. We chose to not use it. Also didn't add RTV to the oil pan gasket but mine seals up nice.

But I feel your pain! I've had a water leak since that job as well! Been trying to find it over the past year and it may just end up being the pump. You did a TON of work so you still should be proud!

I also did rear main last year and that stupid thing still leaks. And we did that to a "T" so some things just leak. Also did new steering pump and guess what? Now it leaks out of the bottom somewhere. Everytime I touch something, it springs a leak....

 

You know what. There was no new sleeve included with the kit when I did the timing chain and cover. Just the gaskets and crank seal
I will ask my buddy about the RTV in the corners of the timing chain
He knew to do it. I was dealing with that oil pan when he was doing the timing cover gasket. Quite the process replacing that stuff

The truck just came back from my mechanic. Go figure he noticed no leaks or nothing. Praised me for the work done
Just did the transmission service and the torque bands
I'll let him be responsible if something blows. $2500 Not out of my pocket

I'm just going to buy another timing chain gasket kit and oil pan gasket
I will have to watch it closely and pray. Maybe it will stop or it was just residual oil from pulling the cover but I still have my doubts

Think I'm more paranoid than usual with it cause I just did a ton of work to it that few will attempt to do at once.

Pretty sure I've nailed down the problem

It's dripping on the oil pan gasket
Found out my buddy who was helping with the timing cover well I was under dealing with the pan forgot to dab the corners of the front oil pan gasket with black etc prior to putting the timing cover
Quite the costly mistake. Back to the parts store and get ready to rip the front engine part
FML but its worth it. Love this truck to much haha
Still imo the second gen trucks are the slickest looking out there. I'll keep you guys posted

 

Might be easier/cheaper to drop the oil pan instead.

 

If you think a $8 tube of RTV is "costly" then I suggest you find different employment. Drop the pan, add the RTV, reinstall. Where's the cost?

I wasn't meaning the RTV being costly
Just having to pull this apart again. I plan to start with the oil pan. But I want to get a close look at the crank seal as well and around the timing chain cover
This time I was given the repair sleeve for the crank. We suspected that we might need it but couldn't get one at that time. Thought it looked ok so we went ahead and put it back together
Just my ​​​​​​buddy skipping that part sucks. I think it's the gasket there based on where I can see the leak from and there's no oil spray behind the balancer.
I will find out in a couple days. Pull the shroud out and look in there good and close
Post the end result soon .

Permatex gasket spray is garbage to stick the gasket on the oil pan. So I'm thinking of using fishing line or something to tie it up. Pull it out once im close to tightening the pan back up.

 

Found the problem

Definitely the oil pan gasket after getting it on the hoist
I put some RTV on the outside corners of the oil pan and you could see where the oil was trying to leak out around the rtv

So I get to redo my oil pan gasket. O hell yea lol
then I'll do do the oil pump since I got it off again
