P0138

About a week ago I noticed that my 96 1500 with 5.2 kinda stumbled as I took off on a hill. Didn't think much of it because it ran fine afterwards. Then I noticed it was blowing black smoke out of the tailpipe. It wasn't just a little smoke either. So I do some digging and come to the conclusion it's either the coolant temp sensor or o2 sensor. It's not the coolant temp sensor, so I check codes. Come up with p0138 bank 1 sensor 2 high voltage. Would the rear o2 sensor cause it to smoke like that? Always thought it was just for catalytic converter efficiency.

Just swap them both with new NTK jobbers and call it good!

Moparite 12-06-2017 06:35 AM

There was a recall on the cats in 96, They break up inside. If it wasn't replaced get a magnaflow cat with NTK 02's then you will be good. It's what's in mine and no issues.

Cweldy 12-06-2017 08:25 AM

So the rear o2 can cause it to smoke?

HeyYou 12-06-2017 09:13 AM

Not really. The rear O2 is basically just to monitor the cat. It has some small effect on mixture, but, not much.

Ok. That's kinda what I thought. So now to figure out what's causing it.

Cweldy 12-06-2017 07:32 PM

How much should o2 voltage swing? The front goes from .05v up to 1v. It does the sweep in about a second I would say. Rear stays at 1v.

HeyYou 12-06-2017 09:43 PM

Generally from 0 (.05 is close enough....) to 1 volt. .5 is a perfect mixture.

I think you have issues with the rear O2..... Would be interesting to check the signal return voltage, and see what it really is.

Cweldy 12-06-2017 10:46 PM

It has an exhaust leak right after the cat and has had for a while. If I delete the cat what do I need to do for the rear o2?

Ramman18 12-07-2017 12:11 AM

O2 fouler? Fooler? Something like that. It's a bung extension that moves the sensor further out the pipe so it still reads a different mixture. Enough anyway.

Cweldy 12-08-2017 10:06 AM

Ok. Was hoping not to buy a new sensor if that's not my main problem.

Main fuse

Is there a main fuse or fuseable link on a 96 Ram 1500? I was driving home last night and lost all power. Engine died. Lights died. Everything. I haven't had a chance to look at it. Just looking for advice before I start.

HeyYou 12-24-2017 08:24 PM

In the PDC under the hood, right behind the battery. I think it's like a 140 amp fuse.

Moparite 12-25-2017 09:47 AM

The one in the distribution center is for the alternator(120+).

Cweldy 12-28-2017 06:37 PM

Well the truck started right up. Now I can't trust it to get me home.

HeyYou 12-28-2017 06:41 PM

Did you change anything? Touch anything? Or did you walk out, try and start it, and it fired right up?

Cweldy 12-28-2017 06:53 PM

I unhooked the battery when I got out because I figured there was a short somewhere and didn't want a fire. Hooked it up and started it.

HeyYou 12-28-2017 06:55 PM

That's just bizarre. Wonder if that battery clamp is having issues?

Cweldy 12-28-2017 08:07 PM

The negative clamp has a crack. It needs changed. But I wouldn't think that would cause the issue. I started the truck and unhooked each cable with no change.

HeyYou 12-28-2017 08:18 PM

Sure could......

Cweldy 12-28-2017 10:33 PM

I don't see how the clamp would make it die because of a crack if I took it completely free from the battery and it ran fine.

HeyYou 12-29-2017 07:43 AM

But it may be a contributor to the 'lost all power' scenario.
