98 5.2 to 01 5.9 tranny swap?

just got a 01 ram 3/4ton gas cheap because of a tranny issue. I have a 98 1/2ton 5.2 with a blown motor. I thought i could just swap'em out considering there both the 46re, but after looking into it i came across a few people talking about wiring differences over the years and something about the transfer case not being interchangeable between the 5.2 and 5.9? the transfer case in the 3/4ton works just fine, so i was wondering if i can put the 5.2 tranny(without transfer case) in the 3/4ton 360?

Transmissions will swap just fine. Only problem you will have is the electronics in the trans. The pressure sensor returns a different signal than what the newer PCM will expect. Easily fixed by updating the electronics in the trans, and using the correct retainer.

alright, not to sound too much like a rookie but you lost me. would i have to open up the tranny to update the electonics, casue i can swap'em out, never opened one up though! and what do you meen about the correct retainer?(whats the retainer?)

HeyYou 03-10-2018 12:13 PM

Yeah, just drop the pan, replace what's in there. You can get the retainer from your current trans, and transfer it to the donor trans, along with NEW governor pressure sensor/solenoid. Do not use the old ones..... might be inviting trouble you don't need. The retainer is for the sensor, I think... :) They way it mounted changed..... there may also be a difference in the internal connector for the o/d and tcc solenoids.... It really wouldn't be a bad idea to simply do ALL of them, while you have it open. There are kits available on Ebay for around 200 bucks..... comes with the borg warner heavy duty governor solenoid......

Something like this? i watched a video on replacing the governor pressure solenoid and transducer. Didnt look hard.He pointed out the overdrive and lock up solenoids, but didnt take them off. didnt look like alot of extra work though. and i seen the difference in the retainer. anything else i should keep in mind?

That would be it. Still need the retainer out of the old trans though.

Just realized the coneconnens don't match up to the old wiring, anyway to do it without dropping the valve body? Only one don't match up.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...338a8516a9.jpgOld

Yeah, you need to swap the O/D, and TCC solenoids as well. You *might* be able to do it without dropping the valve body, I recall someone mentioning it was possible, just difficult.

smoky614 03-21-2018 09:15 PM

Yeah, I got the kit you was talking about. Od, TCC and pressure solenoid's all match up, it's just the transducer with the different connection. To be honest they both have the same 4 wires and color codes, I thought about splicing them. But I'm not sure how good that'll be with the splice sitting in tranny fluid! But I'll look around a bit, see if I can't find something.

The pressure sensors are different. You MUST use the correct one for your year truck, else the PCM will get wrong pressure and temp readings, and you will be in there again.

You need the retainer for the governor solenoid, or the pressure sensor, out of the 01 trans as well.... (don't recall which) else it won't seat right, and you will have problems.

smoky614 03-21-2018 09:58 PM

Yep, yep. It came with the 3 solenoids and the sensor/transducer. And I got the retainer you was talking about(post-2000 wraps around the sensor and holds her in, pre-2000 don't, mine had a zip tie wrapped around it on the inside of the housing). I was talking about the old wiring matches up to the new solenoids, just not the sensor. was hoping for a plug and play, but I guess that'd be too easy. Thought about splicing the old wiring with the new plug so i could use the new sensor with the old wiring, but i reckon I better not! Looks like I have some homework tonight, figuring out how to drop the valve body.

HeyYou 03-22-2018 07:25 AM

Is that the internal connector, where the O/D, and TCC solenoids connect to the harness for the governor stuff? Wonder if they sent you the wrong set......

smoky614 03-22-2018 10:18 PM

It all matched up to the original trans. But I did manage to get it all put together and so far she's running good. Almost gave up on finding a way around the valve body but one last search and there it was! Instead of dropping the body you can take off the 3-4 spring housing with 3 t25 screws. The other end of the wire harness is attached to the top of the housing. Just unplug the external connection, take out the screws and wiggle her down. Only thing I had to watch for was two springs, one of which has a metal spacer in between the spring and the housing. The video says you have to be careful, it likes to fly out of there, and can be a pain to hold in place while putting it back together. but mine got stuck on the head of another screw so She wasn't going anywhere, maybe I just got lucky! I took some pictures I was gonna post to show what I'm talking about but then I figured a link to the video would be even better! Thanks for all the help and I'll be in touch if she decides to wig out on me!
