2001 NV3500 Input shaft
 

My son and I are in the process of replacing the clutch in his new to him truck. We have the transmission out and it looks like the end of the trans input shaft is pretty badly scored/gouged. There was complete failure of the pilot bearing. All the needles were floating around in there.

I see on all the Dodge parts sites that the input shaft is no longer available. Is this an after market item? If so can someone help me with a reputable supplier and part number?

If it is available, what else do I need in addition to the shaft? Are there bearings that should be replaced? Gasket(s)?

When I do a search for NV3500 input shaft 04741294, I get a hit at this site, Allstate Gear NV3500 Input Shaft .
It says, 26T, 290-16CR. I don't see an OEM part number anywhere so not sure if this is correct.

I think your best bet is going to be call them, and ask. There are a LOT of variations on that particular part, even among various years dodge used it...... They will be able to tell you how to identify it properly, and make sure you get the right one, and whatever parts associated with it's replacement.

I called midwest trans. I need to open it up and count the number of teeth on the shaft in order to get the right one. Then I have to figure out if it is with or without grooves.

I also came across a repair sleeve in my search. Do people use these or is it not recommended?

For the end of the input shaft??? Hhhmmm....... does it come with the appropriately sized bearing as well? That would be a cheaper fix than replacing the input shaft......

Yes, for the end of the input shaft. The ones I found on rockauto do not come with a bearing. That's my biggest concern with using a repair sleeve at this point, finding the right bearing. Although, I have not seen anything that indicates the repair sleeve does or does not hold up.

Not like its under a lot of stress. Though, being a 'sleeve', that makes it larger diameter than the shaft was previously. I would be concerned about being able to fit it in the bearing. Easy to test before installation I suppose. (and grease the snot out of the bearing before installation as well. :) )

I ended up getting the Fitzall input shaft repair sleeve. It comes with a repair sleeve, pilot bearing and the sleeve that the pilot bearing presses into on the crankshaft. I got the sleeve onto the input shaft no problem. It's a good fit. I can not figure out how to get the old sleeve out of the crankshaft. I was hoping it would come out just like the pilot bearing with a slide hammer with pilot bearing removal attachment. But there is not a lip in the back to grab onto. Can someone help me with how to get it out?

Is there a gap behind the bearing and carrier? If so, back it full of grease, use a drift, or similar object, that fits tight thru the hole in the bearing, and use a hammer to compress the grease, and drive the bearing out.

There is no gap. I watched a video using a similar method to what you are suggesting, but they were using bread instead. And all the videos like that were removing the pilot bearing. I have not seen a video or found a post where someone was trying to remove that outer sleeve/race. And the instructions for the repair kit don't mention anything about it, they just say to drive the new one in.
