What’s the most the stock axle and transmission can take?

Yup, I’m new to the forum :icon_woot:
I’ve tried searching here and google but I am still having trouble finding an answer.
Currently looking at a 1999 2500 5.9 V8 with 110K (automatic).
The truck is really clean and looks well taken care of. Has a huge lift. And the guy has stuffed some 42in tires in there. He used to have 37s.
Im really just wondering if the axles can even take that? And the transmission.
Whats the limit of wheel and tire size on the transmission and axle?

Well I'm not an expert but in my opinion the biggest you should go on stock axels is 35" unless you re-gear your axels or use a doubler going to the transfer case. But that is all just opinion

That truck is going to have Dana 60's front and rear, and the rear is a full-floater. Pretty stout. My biggest concern is in line with what the cat above me is talkin' about. What gears in the diffs?

Moparite 07-24-2018 07:50 PM

I think it has a dana 60 front and dana 70 rear.

HeyYou 07-24-2018 10:09 PM

D70 only if it had a manual. OR V-10, or diesel. (D80 if V-10 or diesel, and manual trans.)

Yeah regearing is not something I would be looking to do. If I end up buying I would just drop down to 37s or 35s.

Dana 60s huh? And yeah I think he meant the gear ratio.

So Dana 60 all around?
Can those handle 42s with normal driving?

A big set of tires does make an auto transmission or a clutch work harder. For the auto tranny, a trans cooler will help. For the stick tranny, make sure the clutch is in good shape.

HeyYou 07-25-2018 07:35 PM

I would be more worried about the trans. :) Gears make a BIG difference here. With 42" tires, I would want AT LEAST 4.88 gears...... if not 5.12....... If you have something lower (numerically) in there, that's gonna DRASTICALLY shorten trans life.

the trans will not last long at all without re gearing the axles for larger tires. Minimum gear set should be 4:10's for 35" tires. But if you want stock power band (and not a complete dog) go 4.56 for 35's and 4.88 for 37's.
The axles should hold up OK to street use with the 42's though the front ball joints and wheel bearings are probably close to shot. Alot of this depends on the offset of the wheels too.
Post up some pics of this beast on 42's!

Yeah I haven’t made a deal with the guy yet, still up in the air. But before I decide, I wanted to know if I should be worried about the trans and axles. Depending on how well he took care of it, they could already be shot. Or, they could be fine. Never know!

This is it. Would be funny if he’s lurking on here or if someone knows him.
