5.9 trans into a 5.2

Back again with a hard to find answer to a question. I found a trans from a 5.9 1500 thats a 46re. My truck is a 5.2L. Trans in mine is shot. One im getting has 88k miles on it. Is it a simple swap and be ok? Will i have issues with the computer and timing? Or vibrations?

It will bolt up but it depends on the year of your truck and the year the tranny you are getting is.

Well, its an RE trans, which implies 96 or later, so, no balance weights on the T/C for externally balanced motors. Should bolt right in, and hook right up. Only sticking point may be if the electronics don't match. That changed in 2000, and the newer electronics are not compatible with older computers. Would need to change the electronics in the trans.

Sounds hopeful. Anything other than the trans cooler and likes i should think about replacing when i drop the old one out? Or while i have the newer one out and on the ground? The truck has 190k miles on it. The trans i got to go in it has 88k

I would just reverse flush the cooler circuits REALLY well, and call it a day. (have to remove the check valve in the cooler line first though, if you haven't already. In all reality, getting rid of it is a good idea in any event.)

Plan to get an after market external trans oil cooler. Factory one appears to go through the coolant rad. Never been a fan of that.

It helps keep the trans fluid warm in those cold winter months as well. Overcooling the fluid is just as bad as overheating it. :D

Understandable. I live in Virginia and we can get some cold spells during the winter but not near as bad as more north states. Our summer months are far worse with humidity.

I would be tempted to go with a cooler with a thermostatic bypass then.

Will look into that. Appreciate the advice👍
