98 oil pan replacement
 

Gotta replace an oil pan today on my buddy's 98 1500 5.2 4x4.
Anyone have some I structions on how to make it easier?
Haven't done an oil pan on one of these trucks so any advice would be appreciated.

I don't *think* you need to lift the engine........ but, I am used to 4x4's...... What I did:

Remove starter motor. (disconnect battery first, then I just set the starter aside, wires still attached.)
Remove braces from motor mounts, to bell housing.
Remove dust shield from lower part of bell housing.
Don't forget to drain the oil....... and remove the filter. (makes some of the bolts easier to get to.)
Pull all the oil pan bolts.
Drop the pan down, and pull it toward the rear of the truck to get it out. On the 2wd, may have to loosen engine mount bolts, and jack the motor up a bit.

The starter was heavy, so don’t underestimate it when you pull it out because if it drops good chance it will break those wires.

Mine is a 98 5.2 2wd, I didn’t have to lift engine my thankfully but I have read many different stories where this wasn’t the case.

Exactly what HeyYou said. If we could store what was in his head in a Wiki format there would never be a need for a manual. Then again I guess that’s what the forums are for 🤔

Mine came out without lifting the engine also.It would be a great time to change the timing chain.

I always put lock washers on after replacing an oil pan gasket or transmission pan gasket so the bolts don't back out. Just food for thought.
