Torque Converter upgrade

So my 01 3/4 ton is pretty much all stock besides the lift and tires and muffler. Wanted to see if an upgraded torque converter would be a good option for sluggish acceleration, but would it make for any maintnence issues or any sort of downfall on an older truck? Also considering this is the factory transmission at 170,000 miles which they don't last forever especially having the automatic 4 speed and not the manual

00t444e 04-18-2019 07:33 AM

What engine?

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 07:59 AM

I have the 5.9 V8, I like to go offroading too so it's nice to have that little extra push too

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 08:01 AM

Don't want a truck that runs off a turbo, no go off-road and less to worry about too overall

00t444e 04-18-2019 08:03 AM

Switching to a converter with a 200-300 rpm higher stall speed will get you better acceleration, and a larger transmission cooler is a good idea also.

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 08:10 AM

Alright thank you, is there a recommendation that would be best for the V8 but not to expensive? For the converter and cooler

HeyYou 04-18-2019 09:09 AM

What size tires are you running, and what gears do you have in the diffs?

For trans coolers, the bigger the better. :) However, there is such a thing as overcooling.... so, a thermostatic bypass would be a good idea as well.

As for converters, given that they are a lot of fun to change..... don't go cheap. Get a good name converter, from a manufacturer you can trust. If you spend less than 200 bucks on it, you are cheaping out. :) Don't do that. :D

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:15 AM

Tires are 33×11.5 r16 do believe it is stock gearing with Dana axles of course, pretty sure 44 is up front 60 is in the rear. Have the Alloy 16×8.5 wheels was thinking about getting steel wheels though because these Alloy ones keep cracking on these Pennsylvania roads.

HeyYou 04-18-2019 09:16 AM

Should be a d60 up front as well. :)

Are you thinking about going with larger tires at any point?

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:20 AM

Oh okay, yea wasn't to sure. Gonna stick with these, I have some beefy mudders for the awful winter and All terrains for the rest of the season but mostly just drive the truck during the winter and fall. I found a nice 2500 rpm stall series think it's for the 36rh transmission though.

You should have a 46RE. Make sure you get the right converter. :D

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:35 AM

Yeah that's what I figured, have heard some really bad things about them but it's doing great by me. Just got some copper transmission lines swapped in, definitely has plenty of life left. I'm planning on getting the converter done hopefully b4 next winter want to have some more fun and get those tires ripping through the snow more and get some better hill climbing in. Can tell this truck has lots more to put out.

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:40 AM

The converter would be a much better difference then a larger throttle body right? All the pipes are finished, had a whole new factory system put in a few years ago besides the muffler, only thing I didn't get changed is the throttle body. Decided to get the factory air box put back on as well

HeyYou 04-18-2019 09:42 AM

Yeah, the transmissions have a really bad reputation. At least, the 46 fellers do...... But, my last truck had over 200K miles on it, and I *think* it was still the original trans. Basically, if you keep the temp controlled, and you don't abuse it too much.... :) It'll last quite some time. Upgrading the electronics is a good idea, and keeping up on the maintenance/adjustments it wants.

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:49 AM

Yeah the 48 is the better one right? Welp I sure hope i get the best from this one, was thinking about get a trans temp gauge. My oil one keeps on messing up, keeps on going down to where it would be when the truck is off. Just had the oil sensor changed too, must be the wiring. If you mean by Electronics like the Alternator I had swapped that a few months ago, or do you mean tuning? My mechanic doesn't recommend it for some reason.

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 09:56 AM

I get my regular tune up and oil change early though of course. Was so aggravated this past fall, had the transmission serviced in October and the lines decided to let loose all of a sudden and had to get the copper lines put in in November. Good ol rusty PA

00t444e 04-18-2019 09:57 AM

A Haden 405 is a good cooler for pretty cheap.

HeyYou 04-18-2019 09:59 AM

Electronics in the trans, The governor stuff. Borg Warner makes a heavy duty solenoid set, that is better than stock.

Yeah, the 48 is the meanest. :) Unfortunately, it won't bolt to your 5.9, rumor has it though, that the internals from the 48 will fit in the 46 case. :)

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 10:01 AM

Alright sweet I'll take that into consideration. Sounds like a good idea

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 10:04 AM

Yeah that's pretty crappy the 48 wouldn't work, wonder if it would fit the 02 2500. That was my original choice but ended up going with this one, could've been more patient. I wanted a truck though lol.

The 47, and 48 transmission had a different bellhousing bolt pattern. They would only bolt up to the diesel, or V-10 motors. My 98 (with the V-10) has the 47 behind it. No problems with it so far, though I DO need to replace my electronics. It gets stupid once in a while. :D

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 10:10 AM

Ahh gotcha, that makes sense then. I was thinking about the Cummins, but I really didn't want a turbo powered truck. The 8.0 would just be to awful around where I'm at with the mileage, I'd probably get like 5mpg around where I'm at.

Here are a few options for converters for you.....

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 10:16 AM

Awesome! Thanks so much, definitely gonna go with that $200 one. I was wondering if Jegs is a good brand, have seen lots of there products around.

HeyYou 04-18-2019 02:13 PM

Someone else makes it for Jegs. Jegs is just the reseller.

Clean the underside and spray it down with Fluid Film, or equivalent... Will help alot with retarding the salts and brine.

Or used oil

Bailey Miller 04-18-2019 08:26 PM

Alright will do, definitely don't need any more rust issues
