Automatic transmission whine
My "New to me" 2001 Ram 1500 Laramie 2wd 5.9l Automatic, with 155,000 mileson it, has a terrible whine when started cold, and sometimes when warm. Transmission fluid is nice and pink and does not smell burned. THere is no apparrent slippage in the transmission and sift points are where they should be. Is this normal, or should I consider changeing the fluis and filter? My only eperience with Chrysler transmissions is from WAY back when they used the 727 with Type A fluid. I know nothing about these newer ones with the Type +4 fluid.
Thanks, in advance, for any and sll help and advice. Dave |
Are you sure the whine is coming from the trans?
|
Yeah, could be power steering.

As stated in original post, the trans fluid is clean and pink on the dip stick, and there is burnt odor either. Thanks. Dave |

I would be tempted to drop the pan, and see if you find anything interesting. Changing fluid/filter again sure won't hurt, and also check band adjustment.

I agree with HeyYou. Did they use the correct ATF+4 transmission oil?

I can only ASSUME (yes, I know what it means.) that they used the right stuff. Right now anything out of pocked is off the page. Our budget is nearly tapped out with medical epenses for the wife and myself. To save where we can, we buy as much as we can at the nearest Wal-Mart. They do not stock ATF +4. Our local Aftermarket parts house doesn'e either. Closest Dodge dealer wants $9.00 / quart and $35.00 for the pan gasket. I'm not too familiar with the newer Chrysler products. The last Chrysler auto trans I had anything to do with was the old 747. It used the old Type A ATF. From what I have read, all of the manufacturers that used to use Type A have switched to Dextron III or Dextron VI. Guess I will just have to nurse it along until we can afford to check it out. Thanks, again, to all. Dave |
2bit,
Thanks for the links. Before I can order online, I will need to crawl under the truck to VERIFY which transmission is in it. Too wet here for that now. Dave |
