will a 46re 2wd fit a 4x4

I saw 2001 46re 2wd on craigslist for 300$. Do guys know if its the same transmission as 2001 46re 4x4.

Can I just add the transfer case to the 2wd transmission?

I believe they are the same, you just have to use the tail housing from your transmission

The difference I noticed was the output shaft have different lengths, so the overdrive portion of the transmission would have to be swapped out.

I was in the process of rebuilding the tranny but when I put in the intermediate shaft into the overdrive unit it didn't fit because the gears inside the overdrive unit became unaligned when it was separated from the bell housing. So now I need a shop press to align the gears as the overdrive unit is under tension, buying a shop press for one job seemed ridiculous so I just decided to scrap the rebuild and just buy a used tranny, but I can't seem to find the right one.

A shop press would be a LOT cheaper than a trans......

You can take the tailhousing to a transmissions shop and have them align it for you.
