Um, stuck in 2nd AND 4th gear? How does that work? Unless I am wrong, you got the NV4500 tranny and the 4th gear is on the main shaft, but all the others are on the idler shaft, so how are both engaged at the same time? Sounds more like an engine problem if it sputters to a stop. Maybe your tranny blew itself up and siezed- therefore stopping the engine. Hard to tell, need more info. Does it move with clutch to the floor, does shifter move at all, engine rotate anymore?

with the clutch in everything is fine the engine turns and all but if i let out the clutch a lot of smoke appears the shifter still moves but it does'nt change the fact that it does not move the truck

There a possibility that this is the dreaded '5th Gear Nut' problem.

Perhaps the UK dealerships are not as familiar with this as in the USA
but it is a known issue that has happened to many NV4500's behind Cummins
diesels over here.

The torque of the Cummins is so great that if you coast down to 1200-1500 rpm
then sharply re-apply quite a bit of throttle
the nut at the end of the 5th gear shaft backs off a tiny fraction of a turn.
Do this enough and the nut backs off and the transmission quits working,
but most of the time the damage is not too great.

So I'm guessing you let your clutch out when in gear, then you get smoke, right? Sounds like a tranny seized up (possibly from improper lubrication) and maybe burnt up your clutch. The cummins will take quite a bit for it to stop, so it possibly burnt right through your clutch if the tranny is siezed. Sucks, cuz that happened to me about a year ago and I had to replace the clutch and tranny alltogether.

Would this not just cause 5th to fail? I replaced my synchro last year and blew 5th out again over the weekend from doing this
