It hasn't even been 30 days...

and the check engine light on my "new to me" 2001 1500 has come on. When I first picked up the truck 3 weeks ago they told me the check engine light was on, I forget why, and to drive it for about 50 miles before I come back for my inspection sticker. Which I did and it passed no problem. Now tonight on my way home it comes on again.WTF??? what should I know about this, im not exactly car savy. I know they will need to hook it up to a diagnosis computer and then go from there right? But past that im not sure what I should do, im not about to get screwed by anyone. Any and all of your input would be greatly appreciated as I will be contacting the dealership tomorrow. Thanks.

You can pull the code yourself ... then ask for guidance here before you go to the dealership.

Detailed procedures here: http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html

Some people with 98-01s have trouble getting the codes themself. Go to Autozone, advanced Auto, Napa or anyplace and they pull codes for free. If they can't tell you the code is for liability reasons ask on here and we can tell you no prob. Do NOT take it to the stealership or any other shop just so they can tell you waht the problem is and fix a bunch of stuff thats not wrong.

ok well I was able to pull the code...Im can't believe I did it but after switching ignition on/off 3 times, my digital odometer said P 1740. Does that make sense to anyone, all the codes I was reading about were 2 number codes.

1740 Either the tcc solenoid or overdrive solenoid systems doesn't seem to be making much sense.

This is directly off the link listed above.

Thanks! I found it after you said it was there, thats a handy little chart. So what does this mean to everyone? Big problem? Probably nothing to worry about? Something the dealer should be fixing? I have no idea what a tcc solenoid is or does.

Best option,

Print out the information in this message string including the TSB TMS BILL gave you and go back to the dealership. They need to perform the testing and correct the problem according to the TSB.

Depending on whether yuo got a warranty or not this should be covered by the dealership.

Ok so whats a BRB III? I would like to see if this is what the problem is. Is this a recall that maybe wasnt fixed by previous owner? Is this something that should be fixed by the dealer, we have a lemon law here in Mass.

A DRB III is a testing system that the dealer has ... no, you cannot afford one. This is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) ... not a recall. It is an instruction to the dealership mechanics on how to fix a certain problem. Whether or not it is covered under warranty will depend on how many miles you have on your truck as this is a powertrain problem for sure. I thought that Dodge had a 7 yr / 70,000 mi powertrain warranty in 01 ... or was it 100,000 mi?
