Keeps the engine cooler, and helps to prevent pinging if you have mods that might cause that sort of thing (advanced timing for example). By itself, it is not a performance mod though.

sounds like something rattling around in your engine under load.. "accelerating".. caused by the advanced timing a programmer gives you.. excessive heat in the combustion chamber or soemthing

Not a stupid question at all. The fuel/air mixture in the cylinder is supposed to burn ... not explode. (If it explodes ... it's known as detonation.) Burning takes time ... a very small amount of time ... it should start at the spark plug tip (when it fires) and expand outward until it fills the combustion chamber. If everything is running right, the expansion will reach the piston top just as it is starting it's downward travel. The expanding gasses shove the piston down the cylinder which turns the crank etc. etc. etc. resulting in power to the wheels.

But if the mixture starts to burn too soon ... either through an early spark or a glowing ember left in the CC ... the flame front meets the piston top as it is still traveling UP the cylinder and the two crash into each other ... and you hear it ... sounds like walking through dry leaves.
