Default O2 failures...

slapped in some NTK 23031 o2 sensors into my 2000 5.9 ram... didnt last long at all. tonight I checked the codes and got the following

p0141 - o2 sensor failure heater element 1/2
p0161 - o2 sensor failure heater element 2/2
p0420 - cat effecinecy 1/2
p0432 - cat effeciency 2/2

p0351 - coil #1 Primary Circuit, Peak primary circuit current not achieved with max dwell time... this is probably due to the MSD ignition and the lack of the tach adapter.

p1281 - t-stat (180 deg, needs to be swapped but still works)

damn it!!! this thing was supposed to be trouble free for a while (wishful thinking), good thing I saved the bosch o2's, I can slap them back in and see if the error codes for the o2's goes away.

Hey Steve I have the same problem but mine is intermittent---throws a code and engine light and then nothing light goes off and no code...its the O2...mechanic at Autozone was saying he has had problems with his and that alot of it has to do with winter grade gas,im not even gonna touch mine till about June...they do make a little box that you can plug into your O2 ports to fool the PC into thinking they are ok and set the right mixture but i havent seen them anywhere....if anyone knows of these feel free to share

those are called O2 simulators and are used on obdII cars only. they are installed where the 2nd or downstream o2 would be and is used to let the PCM know that cat's are working effeciently. It is not recommended to put them in place of the upstream o2 sensor since it is used for controling your mixture (with other components). DONT DO IT!

I put in the original Bosch O2's that had about 20k miles on them and it's running better w/no codes.

update:

Looks like this is fixed. when i swapped out the NGK o2's one of the wires was burnt (shorted to ground on the tranny) and apparently blew the o2 heater fuse (15amp). I swapped out the fuse and it's been almost 500 miles and the problem has not returned.

The symptom was it would suddenly run very rich and start to backfire through the TB. It would do it cold or hot, didnt matter what the conditions were...

anyway, it appears to be fixed.

keyword: misfire (for those searching)
